mpk
Morning all, Me and the wife to be were speaking this morning about the dog and discussing the benefits of having them in the house and out of the house. The question is do you think it is a bad idea to kennel a 1 yr old lab after he has lived in the house all of his first year. Just looking for opinions really and if it would affect him. The reason we ask as he spends most of his time in the garden anyway thanks in advance
Highlander
All our dogs are kenneled from the age of 4 weeks, just after they are weaned. Kenneling is best for working dogs as it promotes a better (weatherproof) coat and they have a home of their own rather than being an underling in yours (unless that is you let them run riot in your house and then it’s not gonna be a working dog for you). If the dog has not lived outside before then this is a good time of year to try it. Put it out in the kennel during the day to start with and after a few days assuming it takes to that OK then leave it out at night and see what happens. I’d give the dog a bone (now where have I heard that before) or something to chew on during the day to get him associating the kennel as a nice place to be. Also stops it becoming bored and starting to bark, chew etc, all the things you don’t want it doing. Same thing with food, feed the dog in the kennel. This works as a good training aid, let the dog out for a run and call it back to the kennel for it's food. If it has any sort of matter between it's ears it'll get the idea pretty quick. Psychology is what it’s all about.
kent
Outside is good! Do it slowly and get the dog looking forwards to his time in the Kennel, do not stick it in and leave it overnight from the off as your asking for issues on that score. Many keep thier dogs in the house initially then put them out when socialised indoors during the better weather. Personally i feel it unfair to aclimatise a dog to central heating and living in the house then take it out in the middle of winter in the ice cold wind and rain for a days shooting, the coats adapt to the conditions they are in most of the time as does thier metabilism. Make the kennel and run a doggy heaven though an old barrel/ stinky damp wood box or similar in a muddy run is not were a dog would choose to make its own home after all

The thing is they all want to make use of it. I should say they don't get to use it for such as they all welp indoors.

I remember years ago going to view some ESS pups and the chap called the mum who appeared from a huge hole under a bush in the garden followed by the pups, she was a worker/pet as the guy was a shooter and the dog lived outdoors.
