it entirely up to you. my spaniel came from non working background but he works bellting. the lab has come from working parents. at the end of it you get out what you put in so if you bought a lab, spaniel, retriever or what ever if you put the time and effort in to it you will be rewarded. it is all in your trainning so dont rule out non working lines but i will admit it is harder work though.

You should find that a pup from a good working line will be easier and quicker to train as they have been chosen from long lines of hard working attentive dogs.

We have a cocker from a good line and she is naturally quartering close in, constantly attentive and eager for commands and a very, very fast learner. I know of other working cockers that come from not-so-good lines that are lovely dogs, and probably easier as pets, but they are just not as sharp or keen as mine.

I bought my little springer who's lines are heavily working influenced and she's been very easy to train and that's from a relative novice standpoint. My pointer on the other hand was so heavily bred from hunting lines she's like a robot and has been hard work (for me) If I go for a walk with the springers i'm walking with the dogs, if I go for a walk with the pointer i'm walking on my tod unless I constantly call her to heel, she'll hunt tirelessly for hours on end...it can be good to watch but sometimes it wears me out!

I'd say get a dog from working lines but be careful if you're looking at HPR breeds as I found my GSP too much, she's an absolute angel as a pet though, as are the springers we have.

Be carefull lots of red in a pedigree don't garantee a good dog for instance have the right sires been chosen for that particular bitch. Ftch to FTch on and on can make a line too hypo, sure some might be great but others unworkable or only for the most experianced trainers / handlers. No way show dogs, they might do ok but very much an unknown and certain breeds are so way differnt physically between work and show. Someone once told me a good working line with odd dashes of champions shows care and forthought in breeding but lots of it just shows which stud dog was in vouge that year. My GWP has great if not stunning lines, but can be a handfull like a race car he is not good around town and you need to be on the ball if you don't want to end up crashing
