Car loaded with hide / decoys / case of Cartridges / Banger ropes / ready for the off early tomorrow, venturing over the border from Wales to a new permission gained over some wheat, watched for a period this afternoon, some hundreds there, in an out, ..... wow.... look out, exited in the extreme, I'm relatively new to this, really, but will report on the outing tomorrow evening.

Good luck - looking forward to a detailed report :good:

WOW !! Got there about 9.30am after setting up two bangers 1/2 a mile either side of the chosen field point. There were a few about when I got there, set up some decoys on long sticks so they could be seen above the wheat and the rest on the flattened stuff, five also in the tree above the hide. It was humid but with a cooler wind now and again from the back of the hide out over the patterned decoy's. Some responded and came in which gave some nice shots. Fortunate for me I had set up on a downwind flightpath and every so often would get quite a few passing 25 to 30 yards up. Now I did waste some cartridges on those , but also got some great shots out of a few of them. Ended up with 47, Buddy my faithful Spaniel obliged with the picking up from the wheat field and accounted for 45 of them.( Ross the Lab is still in training and too soon to show him the real thing ) it took me and my wife an hour to remove the sticky 'Goose Gogs' from Buddy this evening though, now first job tomorrow is breasting ready for Pate / Burgers / Stewing bits .....

Well done!

But I'm confused. What are the rules about shooting over standing crops? I thought you had to wait until the crops were cut - or else get a ********** from the farmer. Is it acceptable as long as you've got a dog to pick up for you? I'd hate not being able to go out after wounded birds.

Someone told me recently that you don't need to worry too much about flattening a few bits as the combine harvester picks it all up anyway. I find that difficult to believe.

Obviously, I could ask my farmer myself - but I'd rather look dumb here than face to face with the man who lets me shoot!

Woody Popper, Hi, not sure if there are rules governing this. The place was being hit by the Pigeons and the farmer asked me to sort them for him. It is right that the combine picks laid stuff up. I personally think that what i knocked off the stalks or flattened yesterday is far less than the Pigeons were eating, so , there are 47 less of them eating today !
