Shooting flattened barley

Forgive that lack of knowledge on this subject! Went out last sat and shot 106. Picked most! What is best method for picking birds in standing area of the field? Do you shoot and get dog to retrieve straight away while the area still has pigeon coming in? Or do you shoot a few and get the dog to do a sweep when it's quiet! It's hard retrives for a dog going in blind to standing crops and puts off incoming birds ! What's the best method! U can't guarantee that every bird is dead and don't like the idea of them injured for any length of time so are there any methods you guys use?

i dont like stooting standing crop and i will not use a dog on barley. not fair on the dog.

If i do have to shoot standing crop i will try and shoot the birds so they drop in the open. if they land in the standing crop then i will leave then where they fall as it is a control exercise and not for sport. if i can get away with not shooting then thats what i would rather do.

all the bits that brake off and get in your socks, itch like mad. same on the dogs coat, plus the amount that gets in the ear and does not come out by its self. cost me to much money with visits to vets.

just not fair to work a dog in it. i know a lot of good dog handlers and they will not work dog in drying barley.

I agree, ears and eyes, in between the digits, not nice for the pooch.
