Mark. This is what I put in my letter a few months back: "As I have been a named mentor on the firearms certificate of a novice shooter who has a certificate issued by Thames Valley Police, I believe that I am entrusted by Thames Valley Police not only to judge for myself where I can safely shoot but also to provide guidance to a novice to shooter and ensure that they always act in a safe and responsible way and to take responsibility for their actions as well as my own." They came out and had a chat to me about it and said that I shouldn't really have been a mentor with a closed cert but that was there mistake for allowing it in the first place. I don't know if there is any requirements to have an open cert or not to be a mentor but didn't I ask either. They then looked at my ammo use, asked where I was going to be shooting etc. As I had just moved house (which was the reason for writing to them in the first place and thought I would try and get my cert opened at the same time) I said that I was going to be looking for new permissions close by and an open license would make things easier. I got it through a few days later.
