new to the flock
Someone ask me awhile back if I would put up the directions on making a horn whistle, so here it is. Step 1 Choose a suitable antler. Step 2 Cut your antler off square at your chosen point. Step 3 Drill a 1/4 inch hole, 1 and 1/2 inches deep. I am using whitetail antler which is very dense, so this may change from roe or fallow deer which seems to be much softer. Step 4 Cut the beval for the mouth piece. I try to cut this around 40 degrees. Step 5 Cut the chamber hole. The cut for the back wall is sloped between 30 and 40 degrees. The cut on the front wall, (closest to the mouth piece), is straight down. Step 6 Using a piece of 1/4 inch doweling aline it to the straight wall of the chamber hole. Mark the slope of the mouth piece and cut the dowel at this point. This will be used to create your reed. Step 7 Using a sharp knife, slice a small portion off the top of the reed you made in Step 6.I find it is best to slice thin sections off the reed at a time. I also find that in most cases that you will trim off 1/3 of the reed to aquire the correct pitch in the whistle. As you trim a section off place the reed in the whistle chamber and test for whistle and pitch. Step 8 When correct whistle pitch has been attained through trimming and testing, use a good quality carperters glue and fix the reed into the whistle. Test and adjust after placing into chamber, and then let dry. Step 9 Drill lanyard ring hole in whistle. The finished whistle.
Dead-Eyed Duck
That looks brilliant. One word of warning - I had a beautiful whistle as per the above, and my bloody cocker chewed it to bits. Don

new to the flock
PM me your address, I have a couple of very bland tips here that you can have for whistles. They will not make anything fancy but you can work the bugs out on them. NTTF
