Shot making

Recommended Posts

we had a go today, built a simple type shot maker as displayed in one of floating chambers other post, just a box with holes drilled in one end,had a few test runs with it but only managed to make flat shot at best

questions for anyone that is in the know

1. Should the ramp/slope to the coolant be a certain angle and length?

2. What is best to use as coolant, a shallow pan of water seemed to give us the best result but the shot was still flat

3. does the ramp need to be heated to is a cooler ramp better?

4. what height should the shot be allowed to fall before it reaches the coolant

if someone could give a bit of advice that would be great

Cheers

I found with my shotmaker that the optimum length for the ramp was 28mm with an 18degree tilt, then the whole machine was tilted a further 12degrees to increase pressure on the drippers, making a total of 30degrees. The ramp wants to be hot and well chalked, then as close to the colant as is practical, less than 6mm.

Fabric conditioner is the best coolant because it retards the cooling action a little which stops the shot from bursting like popcorn.
