huffhuff
The shogun (51 plate DI-D) has been running fine recently. Yesterday, I noticed it took a couple of extra 'wurr wurrs' to get her started. Driving back through the lanes last night, the headlights dimmed. Then they came back. Then the radio lost power. Then came back. Then the diff light was blinking and it wouldn't engage 4x4. All came back again. Got home, wipers slowed right down. I switched off lights - they sped up again. I got in this morning, turn the key...click click click click click and a long walk to work. Now, i'm not that hot on mechanics. To me, it could be battery or alternator? But...a few weeks ago, this bad boy felt out of the engine.... It came from around the alternator, underneath it somewhere. Square head and threaded only at the tip. I am guessing alternator mount? But not tension? It did squeak a bit after, but the disappeared. Could this have caused a domino effect? Answers on a post card... huffhuff
Yes I bet its the bottom alternator bolt Is that one used for tension? It was dark when I looked, couldn't see much. If it is the bolt...could it have caused the problem...and what is the problem likely to be? Ta
Rushjob
If it's an alternator bolt, it falling out will allow the alternator to move position. This can release tension on the alternator belt and allow the drive belt to run loose or even come off completely, meaning that the alternator won't spin as fast, if at all, thus not charging your battery, giving the symptoms you describe above. mfletch
Yes the problem will be the alternator belts slipping so its not changing the battery Just find a new nut for the bolt and have a look around the alternator and but the bolt back Charge the battery and check the belt tension

Super. Think i'll go try put that bolt back in then Obviously, that's exactly what I thought it was. Once i've prodded around with the bolt, i'll give the tyres a kick and look aimlessly at the engine. Making sure before I go in, I grease my hands up so she thinks i'm a real man. Cheers guys. 10/10 Edited August 26, 2011 by huffhuff

Redditch
I´d put a bit of Loctite Screw Lock on the threads when you put it back, prevention is better than cure. NOTE, don´t use Stud Lock or you´ll never move it again LOL Edited August 26, 2011 by Redditch
