kip270
Ok guy's i have been putting a lot of thought into this. I am looking to get a Dog for Stalking(no not to stalk the dog before anyone say's it). I used to have three spaniels so i have a fair idea for training wise; obdience and so forth. The breeds i am thinking of are Beagle;Lab;Teckel;or a HPR. I have a limited experience with Labs, and size wise could deal with a wounded deer if needed. But i like the look of the Beagle, but i know nothing of their temperament and attitude to training?? Teckel's i have no experience at all, but size wise, it would not be able to deal with a wounded deer. HPR's, i have used whilst hawking a few years ago, a wirehaired pointer. So i am really looking for advice on the beagle first of all.(fell in love with them when we landed in OZ, they had one for sniffing out fruit in our luggage) Thanks for your thoughts
new to the flock
Kip270 Beagles are very biddable and train well if you put the time in while they are young, 8 weeks and forward. The problem that you will run into is that in all likelihood it will give tongue while trailing. Hounds are bred to voice while hunting. In the case of a wounded deer, this will push the animal forward. My personal choices for a deer trailing dog are the Jack Russel and the Dachshund or Teckel. Of these two the Teckel is probably the easier to train and the more willing to please. Before anyone jumps down my throat, I run both. Although they can both have a mind of their own, the Teckel comes around to my way of thinking far easier than the Jack Russel. Between the two I think it would boil down to which breed you are more personally drawn to. Hope this helps. NTTF

marsh fox
The sweedish use a small beagle type dog for deer stalking and hare hunting, its not a teckel but called a drever a bit like a basset sort of animal, it has short legs, they are very popular over there, every other dog is a drever. You will strugle to get one here i think, the bavarian mountain hound is suposed to be good i think jan anderews has them from what i hear. Standard dashounds are all show ones over here i think but i think they are used by the continentals to. Amore feesable option is the HPRs and of course the german shorthair is the most common of these, but as mentioned dont forget the good old Lab and springer, the only down side is they are just as expensive nearly now as the more versatile breeds like HPRs so i think a lot more continental breeds will start to fillter into shooting now the breeders are milking the money on the bread and butter dogs you may as well have steak at a penny more
