Harnser
I am a gregarious creature and do love the company of others . I have never been a loner but at times I do love to experience the country side by myself . Mainly at Pre-dawn waiting for deer to show themselves . To me this is a magic time to be alone in the country side or in a large woodland listening to all the sounds of the night . If you are about at this time of the day you will be amazed at how much you can see and it never really gets dark once you have your night vision . Sitting alone in a piece of woodland at night is a unique experience and it is amazing what you can hear and see . The woodlands are more active at night than they are are during day light . Foxes ,rabbits ,deer and owls moving about their nocturnal habits . You will hear the cry of rabbits being taken by foxes and the squeak of mice being taken by owls . I have had foxes walk past me within ten yards of me and deer I thought were going to lay down beside me . Hedge hogs scuffling about around my feet and all sorts of noises in trees ,birds flapping about and moving from limb to limb up the trees . I have taken guns stalking for their first time and got them into a high seat well before daybreak ,every single one of them commented later on what a magical time of the day it was to be out in the countryside . If you haven't tried it yet give it a go I am sure you will have to agree with me . Harnser .
ziplex
I'm more of a miserable sod and am quite happy being by myself (with dog), I find the forshore, when the light comes up and birds start moving on a frosty winters morning, to be quite an uplifting place to be.......a duck or two helps obviously. Also roost shooting, tucked up quietly in a wood with hare just yards away on the edge of a field or roe deer foraging quite close is quite satisfying too. If you don't enjoy that sort of environment at those times you're missing something.....surely? Edited August 31, 2011 by ziplex
Scully
I keep trying to tell my missus and kids about this, and that you don't HAVE to take a gun with you to be amazed at the experience.I have seen some wonderful things while sitting in a high seat as the sun comes up or goes down.It can be magical, and often rouse myself in Summer to get onto the Fells before the tourists. Some people don't know what they're missing, but my dog and me do. Of course,a 'good' walk is often improved by taking a gun with you.

Its a totally different world . Harnser .

BenBhoy
know exactly what you mean mate. my favourite time of the year is lambing time. my missus think im absolutley mad, she says "how can you love being elbow deep in a sheep at 4 in morning??!" but like you said you have to experience it to understand (maybe no the fisting a ewe bit). our lambing shed backs onto some woods, and as i sit there watching my girls, sipping from flask, i listen to the tawny owls and then the dawn chorus as day breaks. always a low mist at this time, but when it lifts get lovely view of the trent, geese flighting and distant cows heading for milking. love it. MartB
Agreed, but it is possible to get some of that experience at other times of the day also (Late sleepers note!) Different types of weather make a difference also (Wet, windy.. and that's just me!) Thinking about it,most of my days out amount to a good walk with a gun, so philosophy and an appreciation for whatever comes my way is essential!
