Advice on reloading 12 guage

Recommended Posts

Put it in the wrong section, so hopefully the Mods will place it in the reloading section, Silly me

Recently bought a lee junior from this site, being new to the reloading scene, after some advice on whats the best powder to use, best kind of primers, wads(would prefer to use fibre) but plastic at a push,

Also with regards to shot, where to get it, I'm told that RFD's will only order it in with their cart deliveries, so may have to wait!! can you buy it direct?? from somewhere,if any one has shot(size 6) they are surplus of, will buy it from you..., as the other bits, i assume they have in stock??

The reloads will be used for pigeons.

Cheers

Alan

first before you just buy any old components, find a recipe of a cartridge you`d like to load, what speed etc.

we may be able to save you buying poor components.

if you want cheap, i`d stick with a load at 1200fps, and maybe an ounce of shot. at the slightly slower speeds its going to pattern better anyway.

candidate powders are vectan AS, gm3, but i`m certain there are others.

good luck

Hi there,

i use 2/34 drams of red dot shotshell powder,

i use federal plastic wads 28 gram shot load

7 lead shot, this enables me to use for clays and pigeons at a sensible range.

I use cheddite 2/34 primed hulls and cheddite primers.

I buy my shot from Henry Krank www.henrykrank.co.uk

the rest of my components i purchased from shotgun reloading www.shotgunreloading.co.uk the proprietors name is John and hes excellent and very helpful in gaining you components.

hope this helps mate :good:

erm, i seriously beg to differ.

2,3/4 drams is 75 grains of powder. i seriously want to discourage you from using un published data.

21grains of vectan AS is by far cheaper and safer than 75grains red dot.

The suggested bushing and red dot powder was provided on the charge table that came with my Lee loader

i do a drop check when i start reloading. i weight 10 individual drops.

you may find the bushing powder tables way off. i`ve even had to go up 3 bushing sizes for the right powder drop. the charts are misleading.

Thanks for the, advice, i initially had probelms with a smaller bushing, loaded a few test shells, fired and the wads didnt clear the barrels  , since ive been using the 63 bushing they have been quite consistant and cyced through my auto without issue, however i may look into other dat just to be sure :good:
