Mangled99
Can anyone recommend a cheaper subsonic cartridge for a 20 bore hushpower in either a 5 or 6 shot for pigeons as the Gamebore hushpower cartridges I've been using are getting close to £300 for 1000. I use the hushpower as the farm I shoot on is quite close to houses and I like the low noise.
bicykillgaz
not sure if its the same for the 20g but in my baikal .410 i found normal 21/2" shells was quieter than the 3" subsonics so i would try some 21/2" light loads to see if they are better. i personally think hushpower carts are a rip off even the standard 3" .410 was only slightly loader than subs. get a box of each and get a mate to stand 50-100m away off to one side and put a couple of each through in noo particular order i bet he barely notices the difference. atb gary Edited September 4, 2011 by bicykillgaz
Mangled99
I've tried standard Eley 28g 6 and I think there is a difference from behind the gun, that's why I was wondering if anyone knows of any subsonic carts that aren't £300 for 1000. sitsinhedges
Make your own, you'll end up with a much better cartridge far more cheaply Here's the result of some I made earlier All shot with 28grams of no6 travelling at about 1100 fps
bicykillgaz
hi, you get a better idea of how they sound from further away, i'd get someone else to shoot while you stand near the houses and listen, if its like the .410 i would guess there isn't enough of a difference to be paying the extra £100 a 1000, might sound daft too but i find even in a standard 12b that heavier shot sizes seem quieter and have less off a crack (does anyone else find this) might be worth trying a larger shot size in a 21/2" shell. gary

bicykillgaz
shot speed is the key. not shell size. i use imperial game high pheasant 34g no5's and they are a lot easier on my shoulder and seem more quiet than my 32g no6's, would this be down to a slower burning powder or just less of the same maybe? i also noticed it with some eley 34g bb's i had fox fox. atb gary Edited September 4, 2011 by bicykillgaz
Mangled99
Thanks for the reply's, as for the reloading I don't have the knowledge, time or reloading kit. I guess it will take a long time to make 1000 and I wouldn't like to make a mistake.

They are 28gram fibre and when I chrono'd them they were only doing 1150 fps. Maybe they will be quite quiet, never did try them in the hushpower. There the ones I tried, I didn't know they were tested at 1150 fps as I believe the speed of sound is 1125 fps. That's probably why they were louder than the gamebore hushpower carts. Does anyone know of any 20 bore carts that are subsonic?

Your choices are either buy Hushpower 30g/5 cartridges which are rubbish and expensive, 24gram claybashing subsonics in 7.5 shot which are far from ideal for shooting live animals or you load your own and get a decent cartridge at reasonable cost or you find a standard 20gauge fibre cartridge that doesn't make too much of a bang thru your gun and accept that as a compromise. Thanks That was the answer I was looking for, I take it nobody makes a decent subsonic cartridge in 20 bore in either a 5 or 6 shot at a reasonable price. Looks like I will have to swallow the extra £100 then.
Mangled99
Make your own, you'll end up with a much better cartridge far more cheaply I've now watched a few youtube clips and reloading looks quite easy and it looks as if you can make between 100 & 200 per hour. If I have a go at this what would you recommended? There is a vast difference in prices for the kit would a Lee Loadall 2 be the way to go and would this do 12bore as well as 20 bore or the MEC junior which is nearly 4 times as expensive. Also what loads would you recommend for the hushpower, I take it I would have to buy some cases as I throw all my emptys in the bin when I get home. Also what powders, primers, cardboard rings and wads (fibre)would I need to get and any recommendations as to where I could get them in Kent. So much to ask!
