well guys just back in from doing a spot of lamping with our lurcher a i brought the .17 with me aswell for the craic.

the weather wasnt ideal for lamping but still had to just get out for a while we managed to get a few runs after a few rabbits and caught one and we shot a fox but she was making off so we let the lurcher after her. she took her down just before the fox made the hedge. dont kno why the fox even made it as far as she did the bullet went straight through her chest and out slightly behind her shoulder.

The fox ran because despite what you read the .17 is not that reliable for fox. ( i am assuming hmr).

it is a hmr alright.

yeah ive noticed that alright. the fox normally runs about thirty yards and then drops dead. but not this time :sad1: just musnt have connected with any vital organs.

I like the hmr for rabbits and have had the odd cracking shot at fox but this is offset by the number of fox's that run despite shots that you know are good (both 20gr and tips). Don't know why but i suspect it has something to do with the lack of knock over that you get with centerfires. Don't run lurchers anymore but cant think of anything more suited to follow up a hit fox. ATB. :good:

it tink your right to be honest i normally go out with a mate shooting foxes with a 223 one of them has a tikka and the other has a remmington the only job for killing stone dead guarented. i still know that the .17 hmr is well able to takes foxes down a mate shot one ston dead at 175 yards a few years back.

eventually il get around to saving up enough money for a 223
