mrfoxbuster
Hi all, my mother has a ESS dog who is 4 years old, it has had no formal training apart from being house trained. I would like to train the dog for rough shooting and flighting over a pond. My question is, is it too late in the dogs life to give some formal training. I have never trained a dog before, and was thinking of buying some DVD's or something and giving it a go. any tips are welcomed regards
shoughton
I've heard of dogs as old as 8 being trained from scratch, so I'd say it should be fine. We're in a similar position with our 3 year old collie/retriever cross - but we're looking at classes. We were all lined up to start tomorrow evening, but it's just been cancelled due to insufficient numbers :( Good luck!

mrfoxbuster
Thanks for the replies, yes he's from a working breed (somewhere in wawrickshire). ideally i would just like to train him to be able to flush and retrieve, and retrieve over a flight pond and see how it goes from there. tigger
Thanks for the replies, yes he's from a working breed (somewhere in wawrickshire). ideally i would just like to train him to be able to flush and retrieve, and retrieve over a flight pond and see how it goes from there. First thing would be the basic sit, stay and walk to heel and hunting should really come natural to the springer, does he retrieve at all? it really should not be to difficult to be honest buddy hopefully there maybe somebody on here who lives in your are who may be able to pop round and give you some tips i dont live near if i did i would. Have a look on youtube buddy lots of videos on there Edited September 19, 2011 by tigger

-Mongrel-
Apparently it's never too late to train, it just gets harder as they get older. I've just had my 4 year old Choccie Lab 'assessed' and it seems if it's in the blood then it's possible! My lab seems to want to retrieve anyway so we appear to be halfway there anyway.
