Greymaster
What breed is it? I would recommend joining a breed training club for gundogs.
Ackley
Have had a 8 week pup a week now and was curious to know when to start training him? Actually want to know as much info... Like when to introduce him to the gun noise ect ect thanks your trianing from the day you get you pup, sitting before feeding, learning its name, coming to command, sitting on command in my opinion start young,I have a 6 month old pup thats been on a driven day 3 times already just riding around in the dog box getting used to travel and then being let out for a sniff around the game and the last drive she sits next to me watching the birds fall whilst my other dog works,
mpk
Very young really just the basics, then move on to training it after 6 months.......don't push it , little and often and keep it fun as at that age it is all still got to be a big game. The dog will only learn as quickly as it can Gun noise in very much towards the later part of the training once the dog can do all the basics first like sitting on command, stop whistle , retrieving etc etc have a look on the dog section there are plenty of sticky topics there
kent
I have a pup of the same / similar age. I am only bothered about the bond developing well, getting to love the car and seeing lots of people / kids especially, he walked through the sheep first time yesterday and saw his first tractor today (these are big things for a liitle infant dog) i clap my hand vigourously when he is involved with his food- but won't even consider a starting pistol for a while yet. The most impressive thing yet is when he looked like he was thinking about dropping one on the kitchen floor last night i put him out the door and he walked around the house to do it on the lawn (chuffed to bits about that, but i wont count the chickens yet). . Starting a pup to young can be a big mistake, the basics need to be totally in there no half measures. Like most things in life poor preparation leads to poor future performance, it's always way too tempting to shoot onto the good stuff. How many times do we hear "i have a problem with my gundog" and the replies come in "back to basics". Looking ahead, i will work at his pace but always doubt i am totally there until i can garantee his performance. As a wild guess into the future with my crystal ball he might come on an easy trip or two towards the end of next season, but wont be doing any retrieves a first go then won't do any wounders. Its a long process and although possible to rush it i wouldn't
tigger
As has been said buddy up until 6 months its all about fun what breed is he? where are you based? As has been said its just the basics at a young age sit, stay, heeling, recall etc more advanced stuff comes later. I would not even think about a starting pistol until around 6-8 months depending on the dog some people start sooner some later but if you have trained dogs before you can tell when a dog is ready or not trust me you can cause a pup to be gunshy with one shot and cause yourself a lot of heartache if you do it wrong so wait until it is ready. Join a gundog training club i have been in a club since i was 16 and really enjoy it and u can get alot of top class training for next to nothing but the earliest most will take a dog is 6 months. And as you have done ask if you are unsure dont do anything if you are unsure there is alot of good info on this site and many experienced people willing to help, there are no bad questions so ask away

straightbarrel
Two and three litre empty plastic bottles, small footballs, things the pup cant get it's mouth around then every few days while you are with him, chuck a few retreives with a rolled up sock or tennis ball. Only a few every now and then, dont snatch the reteives off him either, hopefully he will come straight into you, if he doesn't, dont worry, as long as he go's out, picks up, and makes his way back, all you need to be worried about for now. He will enjoy pushing the bottles around in the garden, all good practice and play for him. The noise from the plastic bottles will help him along also. Try to whistle him back to you when he's returning to you and always praise him for coming back, never chastise him when he is returning, no matter what he has done before that, never chastise him when he is carrying something and always keep it fun for him. Good luck with him. Edited October 10, 2011 by straightbarrel
