deershooter
Back in 2002 I purchased 1 ton of lead 7 shot the price was £880.00 the scrap price was £418 per ton the scrap price is now £1250.00 yet the suppliers want £3800.00 per ton has the manufacturing costs really gone up this much wages have not gone up this much the rent has not gone up this much how come this is happening to reload 12 gauge shells it costs this much 1000 primers £32.00 1000 wads £18.00 3 lb powder £47.00 28 Kg shot £112.00 Total price £209.00 without the case How come we can buy cartridges for £153.00 per 1000 ??? I think i might buy 10000 and strip them down and sell the components and make a profit Powder at a min of £35 per Kg and lead shot at £4.00 per kg is so over priced ,it should be about £22.00 for powder and £2.50 per kg for lead. come on you suppliers I wait your comments any one tell me where I can get things cheaper (all ready know about Siarm) please note Siarms prices now do not include Vat. apache
Lead is heavy and making shot requires heat = fuel. In that time period fuel prices have doubled.
Bushman Pete
Yea tell me about it. I have just started reloading myself. I was looking at my data last night and I realised that I have the components to make 3" bismuth loads. (minus the shot) I knew they were expensive as I buy them for my older guns to shoot on the foreshore. I thought I would ring around today to find the price of bismuth. I was shocked to find it costs around £45-50 a kilo!!! lol I mean that will just about make 25 shells. I can buy a box of bismuth eleys for just a bit cheaper than that. If I want to make them it would cost less to cut some up for the shot. Its all a bit crazy!! Pete
deershooter
Apache I understand what you are saying but the cost of turning scrap lead in to shot has gone up 500%has your heating or wages gone up by this amount? because that is how much the manufacturers are charging, but we keep being told that they dont make anything sorry but didn't see the MD of Eley,Hull or Gamebore riding a bike If they can sell cartridges at £153 they could sell components cheaper but they dont want us to reload. Its not a matter of making the cheapest cartridges I can I am an engineer and like to make things myself but it should not cost me more than commercial cartridges when I dont have to cost in for cases or labour. Not sure I go with that logic TBH. Go and buy yourself a washing machine, but instead of buying the whole thing, order it entirely from spare parts.............see how that much costs! In terms of economy of scale of course the cartridge manufacturers can make them cheaper than we can, they buy in huge bulk, same reason the same cronflakes cost more from the corner shop than they do at Tesco. Realistically there should be no reason that we can assemble components cheaper or more accurately than a large production line.

nabbers
Buy a shackle from a farmers shop and it's a quid, buy one from a Yacht Chandlers and it's a tenner! i think they hike up the prices of reloading components because a) They think we are toffs and B) It's specialised. I noticed you can buy lead shot for divers weights on Ebay much cheaper than for shotshells? Dunno what size it is! Reloading will never work put cheaper unless you come across someone who has become bored and is selling off their supplies cheap. We do it because it gives an added dimension to shooting. I do anyway.
