Man-o-woods
I was given permission to shoot over 200 achers of rape in north hampshire this time last year. Have visited just about every week since then not just to shoot but to do a few reccys. every time I go there i tell myself this time Im gonna see some birds and every time i comeaway dissapointed. its not that the birds are not coming in to the pattern its that there aint a bird to be seen anywhere. You might see the odd pigeon flying past but thats it. The fields have just been drilled with wheat. so i thought there would be birds coming in for that, but nothing. you can see the seed all over the fields. but no birds to be seen. Any ideas why? TJ91
Some places just don't attract birds. They probably have a set few favorite fields in the area and use them all the time. I have permission on a 80acre field that has had peas, rape, barley, sugar beet and spuds in it over the past few years, the pigeons never seem to bother with it but they will pour into a 30acre field quarter mile away which is on the same rota so has the same crop in ...strange! rubythedog
i have some land like this! there is a large wood close bye but never realy see birds on my patch! but funny enuff i do see them on and around it when the weather is poor, i get the feeling the birds dont whant to go to far when the weather is roton so they keep closer to home and drop to near locations! looking out for this type of weather has made me some credible bags, its not a forgon conclution but worth haveing a little recky in differnt weathers. Cranfield
A lot of birds are in the woods at the moment. I am regularly putting large groups out of woods, only for them to fly off to the next one. Early morning forays on the rape and then back in the woods, seems to be the current deal. turbo33
I am sure that for some reason they head more north at this part of the year. There are very few down south..haven't seen any reports of reasonable bags round here for some time now. I was out on two farms yesterday for a walk recce. Over 2900 acres collectively and saw only a handful. I must have walked through miles of woodland strewn with acorns and beechmast....nothing clattering out of the trees or from the wooland floor. Same after the drilling, lots on the surface but there were no birds to clean it up It doesn't seem stricted to just the pigeon population, there seems to be very little bird life as a whole Edited October 29, 2011 by turbo33

Was out this morning not a million miles from Aldershot, plenty of pigeons about they are all in big flocks at the minute, one of the flocks must have had 500 birds in in :yes:one thing i have noticed most of the pigeons at the minute are very small might be they are youngish birds Just to add i was out decoying crows not pigeons, the above was merely an observation whilst i was drinking coffee waiting for the corvids to turn up  BB
