umarex 850 airmagnum

Recommended Posts

:o i've just bought the new umarex 850 airmagnum for £200. ok, the price may be a little high, but i think it was worth it. .177 floating barrel, 8-shot auto-rotary mag, steel cocking bolt, black abs plastic stock (i don't mind as long as it works!), airsource powered & very comfortable to use. all i've done so far is remove the open sights (which are actually very good in lit conditions), fitted a 3-9X40 scope, fitted a parker-hale adaptor for my modified weihrauch silencer & i'm still thinking what else i could do with it, (i have a few ideas... ). i'm happy with it so far & it has potential for many mods :yp: , & at 30 yards, anything i aim at no longer feels the pain that is life as a viable target  . the only problem i have is with it not liking flat-headed pellets as they get caught when you try to cock the bolt, but that doesn't bother me too much, i would rather save my seals than force the wrong pellets :o :o have a look around & let me know what you think. :good:

Hi,

Just thought I would let you know how i am getting on with my Airmagnum. Gives a consistent 10.5lb of fire power. It is well made and feels very nice to shoot with a sturdy grip and excellent open sites.

I have put an ags scope on which i must say, for the money, is the ********. The rotary mag and bolt action are fantastic.

For £200, it really is a very special rifle. Defo the best co2 rfile out there. The only criticism is that it is not yet available in 2.2 and also the silencer/muffler is not available yet. I have fitted an after market silencer but have had to remove the front open site to do this.

Great gun tho...

What mods you got planned? What pellets/co2 you using?

 i'll let you know about my mods when i've done them as i don't quite know how they're going to work out yet. something that is available (when i can find them) is an adaptor that takes 2 12g co2 bulbs to an air source fitting, i'm also looking into having a refillable bottle made for me. i'm currently using the crossman airsource bottles & any roundhead pellets (power-hunter & dai-sung heavyweights work very well :good: ). do yourself a favour & get some gun oil to lubricate the bolt & seal, it will save you a lot of hassle in the future (it's a good idea to do this with any gun :yp: ).

The adaptor will be available through B.A.R or Umarex direct. I don't like the idea of two small bulbs although i guess they are much cheaper than crossman 88g.

The gun is oilled and now in a gun case. Got rid of the poly and carboard box asap.

You hunted with it yet? Its quite impressive so long as you get the head shot.

Im really interested in the 850. I am just begining to realise the impracticalities of hunting using a single shot spring rifle (cometa 300) although its up to the job, its very difficult to cock & reload whilst trying to maintain stealth. I have probably scared more rabbits of with this than the pellet strike. Whats the accuracy of the 850 like? I think I will try to convince the wife that its a must have for my birthday in August. Good luck with huning, I will be interested to see how you got on.. :good:

:P haven't hunted with mine yet, but it is very accurate at 35 yards down our range (which is a little cooler so the pressure released is lower). can be a little expensive on the co2 though :good: . i'm not complaining, i'm very happy with mine

Perry, you won't find power ratings on the 'net!

The rifle will do a MAX of 12lbs for legal reasons but is more than likely set at around 10.5lbs so as not to stray over the limit due to pellet or tempreature variations. This is more than enough in the right hands. Accuracy will make up for power!

Snakebite, totally agree with you on the power issue, better to have 10.5lbs and clean kill every time than to have 12 lbs and wound your quarry. I just thought it was odd that ratings are available for most of the other rifles. Incidentally I have just spoken to my usual gun supplier as I would like the .22. He told me that they received the 22. 850 last week but have had to return them due to power problems.......Not under powered. On the chrono they were comming out @ 14.5lbs with a heavy pellet. He is not sure that they will stock the .22 due to the legal issue of supplying non fac rifles even though he was given assurances that they had been chrono'd prior to dispatch and were comming in @ 11.5lbs. Watch this space.

 very good rifle, especially for the price, has very good grouping at 40 yards (same hole using .177 prometheus pellets, don't use wadcutters ie. ecopells etc. as they catch when loading & will damage the seals  ) works best using a scope but good enough with open sights if you prefer. construction in general is very good & sturdy,..... i'm happy :lol: .

 just cut 8 inches off my barell, now getting a thread cut onto it for my weihrauch silencer (whisper-mode! )

A touch on the radical side, why not get a thread cut at full length and then reduce the length if that doesn't work?

P03

PS No criticism intended, just wondering why you decided to go for it when the rifle was shooting so well :good:

Be interesting to see what power reduction that gives you. As Co2's efficiency takes a nose dive with shorter barrels.

Tony

 as the silencer is a long one, it does shoot pretty much as good as it did when i bought it, still on target on our 35 yard range :) . i didn't realise that about co2 weapons, i assumed they reacted the same as pcp or springers when the barell is cut down (affects accuracy a little, power may go up slightly?)

Umarex 850 AirMagnum Purchased from Guerrilla 29/06/2006

Calibre/ .22

Air source/ Waltham 3,1 0z ( 88g) C02

Scope/ Waltham 3-9x40 illuminated reticle no.8

Add-on’s = Hawke laser/illuminator Combo kit Ref HK3508

Pellets tested

Air Arms Diablo Hunter (1.037 Grams)

AccuPell Crosman ref (112430)

Field Target Trophy ref (61256)

Milbro TR

Webly Hustler Needle Point

All above shot well but only the Air Arms Diablo Hunter Fitted the 8 shot magazine perfectly. All others caused jamming problems on quick re-load. So for the remainder of the test I will be using the Diablo Hunter.

Background information.

This is my first C02 riffle, my preference being good quality spring break barrel or a top of the range Pre-charged rifle. With this in mind I was a little apprehensive testing this rifle, but as the vermin & pest control officer for our local golf club I was asked to find a cheaper yet proficient alternative to the more expensive rifles on the market.

First impressions

I received the rifle less than 24 hours after ordering from Guerrilla.

On opening the box I was impressed at how modern and aesthetically pleasing it was too look at. As this was my first “Plastic†rifle I expected it to feel cheap and light. How wrong I was, it felt solid, well constructed, and expensive far beyond it’s sale value. It was heavy but well balanced.

The 8 shot mag and re-load is smooth and fast. (certain makes of pellets may jam and cause probs)

PS I lost a 8 load mag after 3 days a new 1 will cost you £15 so be careful.

Testing

The setting for this was a small wood at Staden Grange farm 2.5 miles outside Buxton In Derbyshire, a still day at 22.C

I set standard Bisly targets at 30 meters (approx 32 yards)

From the box it took less than 10 minuets to zero the scope (see target on pic) I fired 8 shots in total 4 test then 4 into the blue, over 32 pellets I achieved an average grouping of 1.56 inches (39 mm).

During my research of this rifle I read you can get 400 shots from 1 C02, I thought this was a little ambitious, I achieved 300 at full power and a further 50 at 10 meters less range. The accuracy of this rifle diminished over 35 to 40 meters the question is “ok it hits targets is it a hunter†well see pic, this puppy hit a large buck at 29 meters stone dead, I have now fired over 3000 pellets through this rifle & so far so good.

Tips.

Grease bolt and firing pin regularly to prevent future wear

Rating

Looks and feel 9/10

Performance 8/10 needs cheaper air source and increased range

Total performance and price 9.5/10 (I Love it.)

This is now in service as the preferred vermin & pest control rifle for the Cavendish Golf Club Buxton Derbyshire.

please feel free to comment or ask further questions.!
