the enigma
I've recently got a 6 month old Jack Russell as a family pet. Could anyone give me some advice and tips on training him to walk on the lead. I've tried him on it a couple of time, and he just wants to leap about and pull on it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
ferguson_tom
Although it doesnt fix the reasons why he is doing it I have heard good reports on using a harness instead of a collar. Also in the topics at the top of the dogs page i think the 8 week obedience thread has some information on lead work and introducing your dog to it. kent
A 6mnth old thats never been on a lead before? Slowly mate, very slowly! start at stage one a sniff, stage two draped across its neck, 3 fastened and unfastened on and on no pressure. If you have already forced the issue a bit its harder, i should get a new different lead and collar with a different look, feel and smell and take things much slower, dont be afraid to go back a stage. I am of course assuming its a real issue not just the pup leaping about a bit and biting the lead (most do that)
the enigma
Thanks for the advice. I'd only tried him a couple times on the lead, from his pen to the field, which is about 20 yards away,so he isn't too freaked out by it.But I'll try taking things a bit slower.
