phaedra1106
Having put my Steyr away for the winter I'm looking for a new scope, usage will be target at 100 to 300m. Originally fitted a Barksa 6.5-24x50 then replaced it with an MTC Viper 6-24x56. Both suffer the same problem, anything over about 14x mag and eye relief and clarity suffer, both going "milky" at anything above 18x. My eyes are not great, I wear glasses and that probably doesn't help as shooting prone means I'm looking through the lenses at a bit of an angle. Having looked at a couple of other club members scopes (NightForce and a Schmidt & Bender) the difference is very easy to see (no pun intended). Currently have a budget of around £500 ($850 as buying in the US). Front runner so far is a Sightron SIII 8-32x56 with side focus. http://www.sightron.com/index.php?action=view_document&did=1201816362&cat_id=6&id=
Alycidon
Whatever you buy ideally have shot or three through a rifle with it fitted. I have has a look at that Sightron 56mm and could not live with the very limited eye relief when wound up. What you are asking for may be beyond you budget at present, I would recommend Nightforce, maybe not as good as the Schmidt in low light but not the cost either. If your US purchased scope has any sort of rangefinding or ladder reticule then getting it exported to you may be hard. Dont forget that you will have to pay 2 lots of carriage and VAT on top of your US purchase price. First carriage is to the port of import, the second from there to you. Probably better to buy in the UK or Europe if you can. A
phaedra1106
Only restriction on scopes from the US is if they have image enhancement/laser rangefinding etc., recticles are not a problem. I would probably be going over and bringing it back with me, I do have a load of reloading stuff and 4000 bullets that I'm getting shipped over in a friends container shipment due to size and weight but don't think I'd trust a scope rattling around in there. I've had the offer of a Bushnell Elite 6500 8-32x50 from a member on here but I've looked through one and wasn't too impressed with the higher mag (18x and up), the Sightron (by all accounts) is good to about 22x with better glass which is more than enough for what I need. The Nightforce would be very nice but it's about £250 more than I can justify for a rifle that's only shot maybe 20 times a year at paper and not in competition. bullet boy
The Sightrons are good but also take a look at the Bushnell Elite model scopes-Very good glass!!

phaedra1106
I can do under 1" at 100m now with either my Barska or the MTC and that's down to me not the scopes, it's at 200 & 300 where I need the extra mag and clarity. As I said I'd looked at an Elite 6500 and really couldn't see much of a difference at 18x between the 6500. a 4200 and the MTC. I'm not in any rush as my next outdoor range date isn't until Feb next year :( I may take the Steyr over to the US with me and try a couple of scopes there, just not keen on having it damaged or lost as my luggage doesn't seem to ever get anywhere in the same condition it left!. scotland rifles
I think any scope that goes over 24 mag will suffer the same fate of a drain pipe effect with image clarity being centralised with white clouding of the glass, its not clouding as when know it, it's the reflected image of the light refraction within the scope, no mater who makes the scope they will all suffer at a certain magnification.thus leading to restricted FOV and loss of sight picture/clarity. bob.
