TomBettle
Hello all I've been floating in the wings over the last few months whilst I gain my own water wings (so to speak). This post is aimed at people who already have their own permission, but fancy a shoot somewhere different. The last year I've been providing basic vermin control with a BSA S10 in 12ft lb over my local paddocks and manor house grounds. Considering I am pretty much a beginner, my regular shooting partner and I have done fairly well. More recently we have just aquired a smallish, but very pretty and shootable 9 hole golf course and also shoot over a small holding nearby too. All of these permissions are in the Poole, Blandford, Dorchester triangle. During the last year a good friend, who is often on here has invited me out with him several times to get used to shooting a small caliber fire arm (his .17HMR and also a .22) and also his 12 gauge. Been throughly enjoying getting back in to the sport after a long time away (used to hunt with air rifles some 10 or 12 years ago) and have finally got round to putting in my firearms and shotgun applications. The permissions also need clearing so I am still a few weeks away, but I thought I'd put out the following invite to see if there was any interest or if this was even the done thing to do... Once my tickets come through and my permissions are cleared (or immediately, but just with standard 12ft lb) would anyone like to spend some time with me. The permissions are pretty small, but pleasant and enough rabbits etc to keep us busy. In exchange, I would be very grateful to join you over your permission, especially if I can learn a little from more experienced shooters along the way. I am putting in for FAC Air, .17HMR, .22 and Shotgun. After some time with smaller calibers and if I can find my own suitable permissions I will be asking for the same for people I have met to hopefully help mentor me towards using full bore for deer etc. That's a little way off though. So, anyone want to spend a bit of time somewhere different in exchange for someone joining them for the odd shoot? Anywhere within a sensible drive of DT11 post code would be fabulous. Many thanks and I hope this was the right thing to ask! Tom Edited November 7, 2011 by TomBettle
kenelmh
Found ya! I cannot beleive I'm the first reply! You should be mobbed! Where's your shoots? I'm not asking for grid refs! I don't have a shoot anymore as I could not service the one I had as I moved back to Bournemouth but if you wanted to take turns on a shotgun before your ticket? Dorsey
Glad to see you've both found the right section now! There are a fair few people kicking around in the Dorset area so i'm sure you can find some mutually beneficial arrangements

I don't have a shoot anymore as I could not service the one I had as I moved back to Bournemouth but if you wanted to take turns on a shotgun before your ticket? Hi Kenelmh Thanks very much for showing an interest. The golf course may be suitable for shotgun for a dawn shoot, but only up the top end so as not to upset the neighbours (subsonic rifle rounds better). And, unfortunately, the paddock owners are not greatly shotgun friendly after the lady of the manors husband being shot in the thigh many years ago by a previous person providing vermin control, with a shotgun. Live rounds are fine here, but shot isn't... However, the Small Holding is perfect for shotgun assuming we are a fair distance from the house (and the pigeon flight paths are the bottom end). Probably not until Spring when the pigeon get on the local fields in plague numbers, but do stay in touch and I feel sure we can get a day or two decoying. Maybe by then I will have somewhere a little larger to work too. Area of my permissions are Sturminster Marshall through to Bere Regis. More or less the A31 corridor. All the best Tom
kenelmh
Hi. Pigeons sound good! And thanks for replying! I've not got any experience at decoying but if you wanted some company then I'm up for it! To be honest after I gave up my rabbit permission I have not been looking for another otherwise I'd be pleased to share any I had. So I'm coming to the table rather empty handed so doubly thanks for the offer. Kenelm. I still can't beleive you're not mobbed with offers! I know everything on my permission from where and when to expect the bunnies, to the deer that sit in the quarry, to the fox that tags along, just out of range. I'd love some variation and I am surprised others don't want some too. Maybe this new hobby of mine is a little clicky?
Dorsey
I don't think it's that, Tom, it's probably people not having checked the forums for a while or being busy. I've met a few of the nice local guys so far and they're always happy to talk about shooting or lend advice. I would happily take you out for a day but as I said, my shooting is in Kent so it's a bit far for a few hours in a hide! but feel free to send me a message anytime
adam f
Hi Tom, That's a nice offer. There arnt a massive amount of people on here from Dorset TBH - not compared to the rest of the country. I have made several really good friends and had some great shooting over the few years Ive been using PW. It's not clicky on here, but just be aware that whilst you have offered shooting in return, most of us are wary of people that join the forum and their first few posts are asking for shooting. We ALL want more shooting (well most of us!) and as you know it is hard won and gained, have a search around the Shooting Wanted section and youll see what I mean. Use the forum, keep and eye out, make friends etc and it will come. When I first got my SGC I thought I'd never get anywhere to use it, now Ive got about enough - a few years making links, swapping favours and it all comes good. LT13
Nice offer indeed. It was an offer like this on another forum, that has now led me to having my own permission (acquired separately). I was also inspired to go the FAC route, and Shotgun cert. Never looked back. The guy who helped me, with his kind offer, is now a good friend, who I shoot regularly with. He has helped me, no end with my FAC process. Good luck.
TomBettle
Thanks for the replies guys. Encouraging! Adam, I know it has worked for you and I know you have kindly invited me with you on several occasions including shooting on a fellow(ess) PW members shoot. I have really appreciated the time you spend with me and think that whilst I will never make the olympic shooting squad I am learning with your advice. I was being a little tongue in cheek about things being "clicky", but I do know that permissions are very hard obtained and people are protective over them. The small permissions I have are very loyal to me, but will welcome shooters who I invite along with me. I enjoy shooting with company and if I can invite people with me for a change of scenery (albeit a fairly small change of scenery) I would also very much appreciate the swap. You, in particular, will always be very welcome to come out for a stroll over my shoots anytime at all. We still need to do the two golf courses in an evening. Anyway, all meant in the most positive of ways so I sincerely hope that some local guys fancy a new venue to try. Application is in, hope the FEO is in a good mood and not too busy so I get my interview soon! LT13, you wouldn't be the chap that has only just got your FAC interview would you? After putting in your application back in July... If you are, small world. You are only half an hour down the road so please come and join Steve and myself or just me at some point. LT13
Hi Tom, Yes that is me. Scarily small world. Thank you for your kind offer. I would be honoured to take you up, on that, in the future. Obviously I will reciprocate the offer too, if my permission allows. Many thanks LT13

A fishing friend has just announced out of the blue about his boss having 200 acres that "might" need some work down Bridport way. Never knew his boss farmed, but you often don't know until you start asking! Guys I genuinely appreciate all the replies, please keep them coming. May I suggest people PM me their contact detail along with your own speciality (eg: pigeon, lamping etc etc). If you do have a "swapsie" we can do then please mention that to. I'll form some form of contact diary and will endeavour to invite people down for the appropriate shooting as the time arises. I'd love to go with the original, "swapsie" idea, but as I mentioned, I do also enjoy shooting in company so as my permissions grow and as my little black book of shooting friends does to I hope to see many of you. Raja Clavata
Tom, Reading through this thread I was wondering if you fish and then you mentioned a fishing friend. So, here goes, have you been known to do a bit of sea fishing in your time? including a fair bit of big game by any chance? BR Raja

Raja Clavata
You gave me some good advice a while back on what I guess must have been WSF when Longshanks, MZUNGU MJINGA (both on here) and I were looking into getting a boat. Good in so much that we never went ahead with a purchase. I wasn't one of the regulars there but went by the name of "Billy Smart" and used to fish with John on Edge of Time out of Bradwell. I was also an irregular acquaintance of Roker Ron but don't let that put you off At the time I hadn't done any BG fishing but have done a bit the last couple years off Watamu. Was hoping to return this year but now looking very iffy with the pirate situation. I hope we can discuss both the fishing and the shooting further some time. Small world gets smaller...
