webber
I have yet to get my first dog, and think that the IWS are a brilliant dog, but was tempted by the traditional black lab due to ease of training. webber

MC
I got chatting to the Irish Water Spaniel club at the CLA game fair last year. Apparently they are difficult to get to work. I was told that it is not a natural instinct for them like it is for a sringer or lab. That's about as much as I know and as I have not owned one I can only pass this on. Cheers Martin they do have a natural insinct she fetched things for us at a very early age. I've got one currently and they are magnificent. They are really keen. My dog mannaged to pick two teal in the dark half an hour after shootung them, she has a great nose and they have great personalities. Also everyone has labs, I swear I get stopped on the streat about 20 times a month with Erin my IWS. You will not regret getting one.
