m3vert
Spent another brilliant afternoon out with Adrian from Pheonix Falconry near Gleneagles. The hawk shown here had a brilliant flight against a cock pheasant and even managed a few feathers from him but he sneaked away!! So close and it was brilliant to see this lovely hawk up against something bigger and quicker than her. We went out with 2 young male Harris and the older female. The youngsters although keen to catch showed a little inexperience when they missed a couple of pheasants early on. At one point it looked like they had taken down a pheasant which brought the attention of the local Buzard who hovered above trying to get in on the action! We also had a Red Kite make an appearance which was nice to see. Sadly no joy but still had a great time even if it was chucking it down most of the time! The German Pointer was a joy to watch working, you could just tell that she was having the time of her life charging into the bushes flushing out the birds. I said to Adrian that I could happily come out just to watch the dogs in action! Booked up so I can take my Son the next time and we will hopefully have more joy in February, however you dont need to make a kill to have a great time with these guys Apologies in advance for the bunnet lol
rimfire4969
Sounds like you had a cracking day. Don't forget the pheasant season ends on Feb 1st so you might want to go before then.
m3vert
I might be wrong but I think the season for the hawks is 28th Feb, that will be for rabbits so you need to tell the Hawks before hand that they can't touch any pheasants ;)

Frenchieboy
Reading this and seeing the photo really makes me realise just how much pleasure I used to get from my Harris Hawks and how much I miss not having them any more. After looking at the photo I have to say that I never used to hood my Harris Hawks, but everyone to their own! Even so, what a great photo! Thanks for posting it and bringing back a lot of wonderful memories!
m3vert
Frenchieboy the only reason she was hooded was the two young males were very inexperienced and the falconer wanted them to do most of the work keeping the one I had for later in the afternoon. Every 20-30mins he would let her go for a wee flight though. She was much better than the youngsters and I think had we used her from the start she would have got us at least one of the pheasants the other two missed but thats why its hunting and not catching I guess Lovely birds though.
