beesley121
Hi guys, I recently purchased a greylag 8 bore which came with homeloaded winchester industrial cartridges. All the reading Ive done on these guns say that these guns were originally 10 bores rebored to 8 bores. Because of this, the bores only measure 0.815. Ive no way to check this but was going to take the gun to the gunsmiths tomorrow to have it measured. anyway, these cartridges I have contain plastic wads!! Ive read numerous posts saying not to fire plastic wads throught these guns as the bores are tight and many have buldged just before the chokes. I have read a few posts saying that other people have fired hundreds of cartridges containing plastic wads with no problems. The guy i bought this of said he was given the cartridges by the previous owner ho had no problems. As I have never reloaded cartridges before, Im stuck on wether i should use these cartridges or not. I asked clay and game last week for a list of components I need to reload my own carts but they still have not got back to me. If I cant use these loads, how can I open them without damaging the cases to remove the plastic wads as I need to keep the empty shells for reloading. A rto tool has been used on them i wil try upload a pic of the carts and see if anyone can identify the wad used in it look forward to some advice
wigeon jim
Hi, Your gun is 100% a bored out 10 bore, I have used one for many years and mostly used plastice wads in it, 1000s of them with no problem, I am not saying that it is ok for you to use plastic wads as that is your choice, I have a good 2oz lead load with fibre wads if you want it,If you need to use nontox shot (not steel)then i would open up the chokes as they are very tight, Get yourself some powder and shot scales and a roll turn tool, Jim. shakin stevens
Just chop the crimp off with a new craft blade and watch your finger ends! i wouldnt fire homeloads which where given with a gun unless i knew the vendor very well, the cases will still last a few shots if you look after them and trim the the rough bits off. pavman
the wads not such a problem its steel (if you use it) anything tighter than 1/2 my 10 is 1/2 and 1/2 most start life full and full (for lead) find out what the fixed choke is and get it bored if you need to use steel. I have had 2X graylags in 10 bore its a great goose gun, i now have an U/O 10 Lincoln again a nice goose gun if like me you like the odd trip with a bit of an old time fowling gun
