Winch Rope Help

OK... I've had a Plasma 12 rope sat in the cupboard for a couple of years and up to now have been somehow frightened of putting it on!

I have watched youtube vids etc but am still confused..

  1.
  2. some of the vids say I MUST put heatshielding on the rope where it contacts the drum... but I can't find ANYWHERE that sells it or mentions it!
  3. I was told it has to be put on under tension... best way to do that?
  4. Do I have to replace the old fairlead with the Hawse I bought? I can understand the arguments for doing it but this is a seldom used piece of emergency equipment, not something that is used all the time.

Any help would be gratefully received :good:

1) Just use large diameter heatshrink tubing placed over the first couple of coils on the drum. You can find heatshrink on flea-bay. I think it's only to stop the last coil slipping rather than anything to do with heat shielding though?

2) Connect a couple of old tyres to the hook end and winch them in. Dead easy.

3) What sort of fairlead do you have now? If it's a roller type, I wouldn't bother changing it. I know some people swear by the billet aluminium types, but I don't believe anyone who says they are better for the rope! Rollers will always provide less friction than static aluminium.

  • 3 weeks later...

we use plasma ropes day in and day out you dont need heat sheild on,the bit that goes on the drum first is slightly thicker than the rest,do not use a roller fairlead they do trap the rope if your pull is not dead level, the idea with the tyres on the hook sounds good to tension the rope and last off all learne to splice the rope if it breaks it can save you a fortune :good: go and get stuck the the fun realy starts
