game_boy
Been a good while since I posted on here but I dont post everything I shoot, doesnt mean I dont go out though. Yesterday morning the plan was to go out to one of my permissions that attracks a fair few geese of a few different varieties. It had been a while since I had been here but I know one of the fields floods and holds water like a pond for some of the winter. The day was foggy and spitting misty rain so I couldnt be bothered putting out any decoys. So I made my way up to see a blackie ewe stuck stuck in the fence with its head twisted behind its back, didnt look too good. I couldnt move it so called my friend to come and set it free. So I thought I would start walking away down nearer the pond and see if anything drops out of the fog. Sure enough a flock of 30 or so Greylags drops outs and flys over me. Damn! No chance of them coming back over as im out the open, I load the Maxus anyway and sure enough they double back, maybe still disorientated by the fog and fly over me. 3 shots and 2 birds drop. First time I've shot a Greylay and very chuffed I am too. Especially with my brand new Maxus!!!So they are both now in the fridge. Nothing much came back over me and with 2 birds not much sense in shooting much else. Later on after tea the plan was a change of quarry at my best mates hill farm to keep on top of the foxes. In the many many previous occasions my tally has stood at just 2 foxes but I was too double this figure this time in one go. The terrain is hard going and the distances you can walk are endless. We usually go on foot scanning the fields around the farm. The foxes here are wiley and dont generally hang around. If one is in the lamp then its usually a case of get down and shoot as they dont hang about. Many nights out have ended in empty bags and many times nothing seen such is the vast landscape. So we couldnt be bothered going up hill last night so just went for a drive in the pick up around the lower lambing fields near the road which will be getting used in the spring. The weather was mild, a swirling wind and misty rain. First field, there doesnt appear to be anything there so we continue driving to the next fild down the road and scan to see a large fox meandering diaginally across the field unaware of out presence. My mate parks up keeping the lamp just off the fox, I get out and chamber a round. The end result after whistling for him to stop is a large dog fox dropped on the spot at around 130yrds from me taking the shot off the bonnet. From leaving the farm to this point was about 20mins! It never happens like this! Anyway i'm very chuffed! We then think of going back nearer the farm to lamp where we started off a while back and sure enough another is spotted. Turning out to be a funny night, we spot it coming down a small hill and my mate is happy for me to go out and try another shot off the bonnet. I oblige and get postioned to see the fox now in the rashes, anyhow still plenty of chest showing I fire off the round to see it drop on the spot. WE go to pick it up and find its a vixen. Shot through the chest, the exit wound is behind the should as it seems to have deflected some how on impact. Im very very pleased and great to know the rifle is shooting straight and working very well. Very satifying as I spent alot of time, effort and money setting it up to be the best I could make it. The dog is the top fox and weighed in at 21 pounds. Both foxes werent even squeaked in at all, just picked up in the right place and whistled to stop. Makes up for all the times you get nothing or have to work really hard just to get a shot. Both taken with .243 100g soft points. Thanks for reading.
