One man and his lab
I've just watched the video of Astra retrieving a diving duck and was wondering if everyone can remember their own dogs finest moment, and show off a bit as it is Christmas. I've only been working my dog for 2 driven seasons and I'll never forget the second shoot I went on. Lily my then 16 month Lab bitch wiped the face of the shoot captains 4 year old Lab dog who didn't like chasing one particular runner through the brambles. She chased it through the brambles and went down a fox whole to bring it back to hand. I wanted to jump for joy but being very much the new boy, I kept my head, as well as being one of her finest moments this was by far my most modest moment. I'd love to hear others mosy memorable moments.
cockercas
I shot a cock pheasant with the rifle. It was very windy and wasent the best of shots. The pheasant took off with the wind. I had my cocker with me and off she went. After what seemed like an age (more like 10min) she come back with it. I don't know how far she went. But she and I was proud as punch
Tis1979
we went beating and I always sort it with the keeper that we can flank then pick up and really made me proud, picked a bird that two dogs had failed to find but the gun was adamant it was there and took a little while but he found it, then to top the day off on the last drive walked over to a group of guns chatting and they had picked there birds apart from one Partridge that had come down around 150-200 yards down a ploughed field I walk him down the field around 50 yards so I was away from the crowd and sent him back as he got near the distance they thought the bird was at I started him going left and right and back then I saw his tail go and knew he was on it delivered back to me faultlessly gave him loads of praise and we walked back to some claps and pats on the back. Cracking day. Tristram
MiLisCer
Best ever memory of a retrieve, Winter 1994, just outside Stirling in Scotland. Open Lab trial, I was number 4 in the line. We set off at just after 1030am, walking in a line. Cock bird broke cover and was shot to my left. No1 dog was asked to retrieve what looked like a strong runner. The dog was sent for the bird, after about 40 yards it flushed a Roe doe that was hiding flat in the reeds - the Bambi ran across the line from left to right - 9 of the 12 dogs chased the deer, including my bitch. The dog to my right who ran in too, then went on to retrieve the pheasant which No1 dog had failed to find. That was 10 dogs out of the trial and it was only about 1033am!! - long drive home. I went on to make that bitch up to FTCH though. Mike

I'd been invited by one of the guns from the shoot I pick up on to go shooting in an overgrown orchard, I think I was mainly invited because of my lab and she certainly prooved her worth. We walked down the line of the apple trees and I managed to miss two woodcock who flushed together but my friend did shoot a cock pheasant. I sent the dog for the runner and it dived into some very thick cover, Lily went straight in after and then nothing but some crazy whining. Went and looked to see her trying to get into an old wooden apple bin, I lifted it a little so she could get in. Somehow she contorted to get into and then go through this rotten crate and out she came with a very lively bird. My friend was delighted at the retrieve and she has earnt me another two invitations. I owe all my shooting to one great dog. Steve
