Which 3" hull for reloading steel?

Recommended Posts

Im looking into reloading some 3" 12g shotgun carts in steel similar to (or better than) Gamebore mammoth 36gm 3's. Was wondering what hulls/empties you guys are using and where could I get some? I've placed an ad in the wanted section. A hundred would last me the whole season but If I even had some to get started with. Im also looking a reloading press (ad also placed) but if I cant get one second hand I'll get a Lee Loadall 2 if its suitable?

i am giving the recomendation of cheddite 3" / fiocchi 3" or similar.

never go for the b&p hulls. i purchased them and had to roll turn them. the gordon recoil system is quite fat and takes up alot of space.

steel shells are ever more sensitive to space uptake, because alliant steel isnt very dense and steel isnt either. so fitting a normal 3" components in a 3"b&p hull is an issue.

so avoid.

steel and speed steel need excellent crimps of 0.55" ish.

places to get them would be clay and game, peterlawman, and siarm. if you buy a silly ammount, de prime them and sell the rest. you can send the new hulls in the post without primers.

if you are only going to use a low volume of shells stick to a roll turn over finish and forget about a six star crimp very few people can get good neat finish on a new case you can get 37grams of shot in a 3"rto with a lot of speed (and recoil) and if you think reloading is for you then you can spend on a press and resize the cases you have saved and reload them keep your reloading simple to many people get bogged down with to much info

Ballistic Products (US) sells all types of used hulls for steel and some new as well. I like Remington T6, Federal, Fiocchi in that order.

If you are loading large steel shot / BB or larger, use an empty primer tray with an adequete number of holes taped off for pellet count-- most times you will find 2 pellets will fit to each space, simply scoop the shot, rattle of the excess and dump into the case already charged and wadded then crimp. This works much faster if you have a single stage press that allows the casing to be removed and replaced. Most machines will bridge large shot in the drop tubes (especially BBB and Ts)
