I certainly agree that too short can induce more recoil problems than too long, but in pure ease of hitting clays the former is the better evil. Regarding the trick of laying the gun along the arm, I have always suspected it's too easy to make assumptions from. After all it must be possible to fool the onlooker by the stretch in the finger? You can make quite a significant difference by manipulating the bend of your finger!

The right length is the one that allows you to mount into a bird, low, high or otherwise without in any way having to make allowances. Most people find winter clothing makes a difference here so in essence the trick mentioned can be misleading.

i like to use my light sxs, but it was a pain with traditional clay loads. my light gun just kicked the hell out of me.

it wasnt gunfit or any such, it was just heavy or super fast cartridges. they recoil a bunch.

knocking down to lighter load still made sense, but i really didnt want to reduce my lead in the air. just buy slower cartridges. 24g 1100fps is about right, wothout restricting you too much.

gunfit does matter, adding a pad can change the LOP. now what isnt discussed is those under tshirt type recoil pads.

PAST pads are quite popular.

I Use an Evoshield from this lot:-

( no affiliation, just a satisfied customer etc.....)

I have found it very good. Its a shame you cant buy additional shirts without the pad, but, still very good with "normal" loads :good:

And despite the marketing hype, it actually also seems to make gun mount slightly more consistent too.
