I have been struggling to find any pigeons about the farms just lately . They definitely dont want rape at the moment in my parish . I decided to take a flask of coffee and have a drive around the farms on pigeon watch to see if there are birds about.

I drove across a field of over winter stubble to wards an alder grove which is about 5 acres in size to see if the pigeons were day roosting in the grove . As I got to within about 300 yards of the grove I became aware of movement close up to the grove but out on the sheep meadow . I stopped and looked through my bins and saw a magnificent fallow buck that was the lightest colored buck I have seen for a long time . He was almost white with some darker spots on his flanks . Because of his co lour he had caught my eye ,while looking at him I became aware of 5 other bucks standing with him . One of the bucks was a very dark colour and was without a doubt a trophy buck .He was a magnificent beast and had a rack on him that is definitely a trophy . Another of the bucks could be a trophy as well . I watched them for about 15 minutes and decided to see if I could get closer and have a dry stalk .

I drove to the lee side of the alder grove which was opposite to where the bucks were standing and got out of the truck and started to stalk them through the alder grove . It was quite a simple stalk through the grove with lots of ground cover and plenty of alders to keep between me and the bucks . It took me about 15 minutes to stalk through the grove to the other side . I got with in 75 yards of the beasts and they were quite happy to stay and browse where they were . I had a real good look at them for about 10 minutes from behind a wind blown alder . I didn't want to spook them as such because of the road that runs within 500 yards of the grove in case they run across the road . I gently clapped my hands whilst still under cover to move them on with out spooking them . It was wonderful to see what happened . The big guy stuck his head up and started to trot off like a trotting pony and the rest of the bucks followed him across the meadow in single file . They went about 100 yards ,stopped .the big guy had a look behind and then started to trot off again with the others following him . Not a day to shoot a buck ,but a day to observe some wonderful creatures truly in the wild .
