Donnie
Evening all, my pup is now 13 months and coming on well. Have been having the odd lesson to ensure im staying on the right track. At the last session sunday the trainer suggested the pup was ready for a bit more experiance. Hes been in a beating line in a controled manner and also had the odd retrieve. The trainer suggested roost shooting but ive never done this and was wondering if any member could help me out. Based in cannock staffordshire but will to travel. But also wondering if there is anything similar which i could do? Thanks

Tom&Dexter
What you training the dog to do What was his reason behind taking it roost shooting ?
Donnie
Hes a black lab and i think the idea behind it is that i can shoot and keep an eye on the dog without the pressures of a full on shooting day. Then i can send him for the odd bird without maybe other dogs running in or competing for the retrieve. Thanks for looking

Thanks for looking You say that you've been beating with him. :hmm:So he has heard plenty of gunfire So if it's the retrieving lessons you want to get him more experience with then. Why don't you go and ask the keeper if you could stand behind the usual pickers up.Say you don't won't payment.Keep him on lead unless he is rock steady let him just watch and get him used to birds being killed and missed Ask pickers up if they could leave the odd bird for you each drive to retrieve.Don't send a young dog out while shooting in progress you don't want him upsetting the guns.If he goes haywire. And not when other dogs are still working. This is what iv'e done for years even when i was picking up everyday. When i had a young dog i used to go behind my mates picking up.Trained 1 drive picked up next 2 trained next.Couple of weeks like that and you will see a great improvement in him. Hope this helps.Terry
Donnie
Thanks Terry, unfortunately the two shoots im on one doesnt have picking upby anotherperson i.e a rough shoot and the seconds a bit to "posh" to ask the picking up team or the shoot organisers to allow me to do it. Im after a quieter situation to allow the dog to watch and wait, the odd shot and sent for a bird or two. I think even with a rough shoot there are too many ppl and dogs and in a hide on pifeon he wouldnt sit for that long. Hope this makes sense

Hope this makes sense Posh shoot or not the people picking up should help you. Most dog handlers are usually very helpful. If you could get 1 of them to see your dog handling and if he is up to scratch stop whistle etc i'm sure they would help you out.Unless they are Wxxxkers  Yes roost shooting is ok but you still better off getting another gun to shoot and you watch the dog. Its a lot easier training dogs at shooting stage to leave shooting to someone else i.m.o.Never shoot over mine when training on live game, only in training getting dogs to drop to shot on dummies etc. As to your dog not sitting for long just go hour or so and build it up each time.He will have to learn to sit for hours on end decoying wildfowling etc. Hope this helps mate Terry
