Frenchieboy
I am very soon going to be buying a .22WMR which I will need to get screw cut and recrowned so as to be able to fit a moderator. While I am having that work done I would like to get the barrel cut down from it's currnet 22 inch to an "optimum lenght" to make it a little more "manageable" when shooting from a motor. Does anyone know what the "optimum" length for the barrel on a .22WMR is please?
Dekers
My last WMR was 15.75", that seemed to work fine, although I never cronoed it, but even with a Sako Mod on, it just didn't feel right. My latest I had cut to 19" and fitted a SAK, that works for me and is the way I want it. I don't think you would have any problem with a 16" though! Frenchieboy
Thanks for that Dekers mate! Can i just ask, when you say that the one you had cut to 15.75" "didn't feel right" can you elaborate on that a little please. I should maybe add that I was initially "thinking about" somewhere between 16 and 18 inches for mine and I would most likely be using a SAK mod on it! Hornet 6
I had one cut from 23 inches to 17 and wished I hadn't, should I ever have another one it would be a minimum of 20 inches. Mine at 17 inches was accurate enough but lost enough velocity to go subsonic at 170 ish yards, and the holdover for 150 yards changed by over 2.5 inches. I suppose the best thing to do is strip a round down and run the components through Quick Load with various barrel lengths to determine the expected velocity loss. Neil. The feel equated to balance, both the same guns, CZ Americans, but the shorter barrel just felt back heavy, I could have had some stock work done, maybe even turn it into a Skeleton to reduce the rear weight and it may have been fine (it always delivered decent enough accuracy), but it was getting a bit long in the tooth, I got it used and abused and cheap anyway. So when I had the opportunity of the new chappy I decided to give it a go. The new one just feels better, oh yes, and I had Sage put a bigger Recoil pad on it as they come up slightly short on me! Very happy now! If you are thinking of major use from a vehicle and leaning on wing mirrors or window frames, whatever, you may well find 16" fine! Frenchieboy
Thanks for the explanation Dekers! I understand what you meant now!
njc110381
I wouldn't go as low as 16" I don't think. I cut my Hornet to 18" and it feels pretty good and shoots well too (well it did until recently!). Anything over 18" and I don't think it offers much advantage from a vehicle.
