shoot57 Posted February 18, 2012 Report Share Posted February 18, 2012 Just been to pick up some bullet heads, at the moment they don't have my usual v max 243 in stock so i took a box of v max moly coated instead, whats the coating supposed to do and will i notice any difference? I moly'd the barrel of my TRG... can't get the bloody stuff out now so never know whether I have cleaned it properly... patches ALWAYS now come out with 'some' black on them!!!.. very frustrating.. wouldn't use it again! coyotemaster Posted February 18, 2012 Report Share Posted February 18, 2012 My advice would mirror Ackley's and Vipa's, I experimented with moly about 10 years ago and found no benefit at all. The chrono showed less velocity, I needed an additional .5 gr. to reach velocity---they are slicker and produce less pressure/velocity. According to some tests moly draws moisture and can cause pitting if the bore is not swabbed with a petro product after shooting particularly in damp conditions. You can/ I have thrown a bunch of moly coated bullets in the tumbler overnight and taken 95% of it off or return and wait on uncoated bullets. I usually give mine a fresh acetone patch followed by clean patch, do that until nothing is coming out, do another clean patch, a good scrubbing with an oily patch, 1 more clean patch then do a final run with Hoppes#9 for barrel protection. I think that CLP is the cats whiskers for lubing most all firearms mechanisms, particularly autoloading shotguns, when it drys it is slick as the other end of the cat. It's stainless steel pins so no worries about having to change them Indeed, CLP is the dogs danglies, managed to get a 16oz bottle back from the US ok, still haven't figured out why the TSA took my Hoppes #9 and RCBS Case Slick though :( brought them back before with no problem.
