LondonLuke
Hi all I am keen to gauge what people feel are the essentials to get going with shooting are, at this stage I'm talking clays not quarry but keen to hear thoughts on both. My list thus far - shotgun licence - shotgun - BASC membership (inc insurance) - cartridges (I have a MILLION questions on these) - coloured glasses - apologies, not sure on terminology - shooting "jacket" - ie big pockets for carts - ear defenders Let me know what else you feel are the essentials, also very interested to hear on where you purchase from as I am looking for somewhere online as no local shop to me Thanks Luke Edited February 24, 2012 by LondonLuke
Blunderbuss
You're not far off. Add a gun slip and cleaning kit to the list
LondonLuke
You're not far off. Add a gun slip and cleaning kit to the list Ah yes gun slip, nice. I dont own any of the above, and am incredibly impatient but keen to know what to expect to need and initial outlay. Bakerboy showed me the tips of a gun slip, including not folding it and having it the right way up when carrying! Do you clean your gun everytime you use it? LondonLuke
i always clean mine,,but thats just my own preferance,,but if you have not got anything yet then be prepared to spend Yes by no means a cheap sport to get into, glad I didnt attempt it any earlier in my life, would have given up at the first hurdle! I do but some don't, different schools of thought on this. There are lots of threads on here on gun cleaning if you do a search Thanks mate, will investigate. I have installed a break down cabinet so thinking this may encourage me to clean them Or end up buying a bigger cabinet and not bothering Snap caps :yp: :yp: I dont think I know fully what these are? Are they "pretend" carts that you put in your gun when you store it? What is their purpose? Are they more important in ejector/non ejector guns? bedwards1966
A slip and cleaning kit pretty much completes the list I think. I find eBay to be quite good for many items. I'd suggest cleaning your gun after every outing, it keeps it in good condition and prevents pitting the bores.

cant hit rabbits 123
I would advise cleaning your gun after every use. Otherwise damage could be caused to the barrels in the form of pitting. Your list is quite comprehensive but for cleaning kit and slip. Do a search on this site for cleaning methods, which will vary for differnt types of gun.

Unfortunately I have a long wait, only just sent off the application! I would advise cleaning your gun after every use. Otherwise damage could be caused to the barrels in the form of pitting. Ok cool, thanks man, I will investigate though guess it might be a more specific search once I have my gun etc
bedwards1966
  Dare I even ask?! Sorry, so much to learn! Pitting in the bores is corrosion, which occurs when the gun isn't cleaned after it's fired. It's not usually an issue, unless it gets very severe and makes the barrel walls dangerously thin, however it's really not a desirable condition and is easily avoided by simple care. Snap caps are basically dummy cartridges that have a spring inside, you put them in your gun and fire it to relieve pressure on the springs inside the action - firing the gun without snap caps in can lead to broken firing pins so should only be done with them in place. However not everybody feels snap caps are needed, do a search on here and you'll find threads about them, you'll find some very strong views on them. Then make your own decision on them! Thanks for this, as I havent started shi77ing £50 notes I will definitely be taking good care of any gun I do buy so will be cleaning as best I can. I will search to see the best methods. Makes sense regarding snap caps though I am probably best to research this and see what opinion is. I am not keen on the idea of having the gun "primed" and therefore extra tension added but in an ejector are you just moving the strain to the ejection springs which are far less designed to be long term held? Also never seen the snap caps in shops and dont imagine they have a huge turnover, that said I have been in very few shops and they may have been there without me realising! castletyne
I wouldn't worry about snap caps I just see them as gimmicks that you don't need
