New shoot

Managed a walk over a new permission today for a few hours. Only around 700 acres but shows a bit of prommise.

With a few acres of woodland it holds the usual suspects. Was asked to leave any rabbits as there ain't many around.

Managed a quick maggy once in the trees and a woody for my tea a little later. Took my eye off the ball coz I'm a big softy and came across a big black sheep with two lambs only a few minutes old.

I was soon snapped out of it by a woodcock comming straight at me then doing its usual acrobatics through the trees. I managed to raise the gun as I closed it and fumbled the safety off. Not a chance, it was in the next county by time I got the barrels on it.

Then again better not to discharge without a cartridge in the ruddy thing...... and I'm sure the new barlambs would have parped themselves.

Looks good overall and I'm sure a few good days decoying in the pipeline.

Well done on the new perm, I've had no luck so far round here, but might have a chance on a small local farm coming up soon, fingers crossed, a lot smaller than 700 acres though.

And yes I've always found putting a cart in helps sometimes, sometimes it makes no bloody difference. keep us posted on how you get on.

Sorry chaps, shouldn't have tried to inject humour.

When rough shooting I very often (probably usually) mount on everything. From sparrows to pelicans and beyond I practice my mount. I even do it in the car without a gun whenever I see a bird.

It don't mean I'm going to pull the trigger and as pointed out even without a load. Even after being asked to leave the bunnies alone I ashamedly mounted on several without discharging t'gun.

You can call it what you like, I call it practice.

Once again my deepest appologies for upsetting the game season maffia and the hard of thinking. No out of season haminules were hurt in the production of this thread.

Oh god, there I go again with humour......... sorry!

Smig I simply commented on the fact that sometimes whether my gun is loaded or not it matters little to the bird I'm aiming at as it often flys away unharmed.

We don't all take humorous comments as seriously as you do apparently.

But it's always reassuring to know that there's someone that sad and boring to go through all the comments and try and start an argument, you don't happen to live under a bridge do you, only that's where the rest of the trolls live isn't it.:lol:

Well said.

I shouldn't complain really it's nice to know people out there care about these things as indeed I do. The fact my shotgun doesn't have an auto safety and I dont engage it when empty doesn't come into it but hey ho. The comments were to show my poor shooting abilities rather than my desire to shoot the bird. I suppose it's easy meat to those who feel the need to troll or whatever they call it.

I can't wait to be called a newbee. At my age I wish I was.

Wouldn't it have been easier to just hold your hands up and admit you didn't realise Woodcock are out of season at the moment?

As I say boys a light hearted thread on being taken a back by a woodcock that should have been on its way to Russia or wherever and a bad attempt by me to fanny about and see if I could catch up with it.

Take it how you want to. And do try to lighten up. Life is far too short.

Oh by the way has anyone actually managed a woodcock ( in season ). I have probably come across half a dozen over the years and never managed to get near a shot off. How the hell they manage a right and left ill never know.
