pavman
A while back I had reason to get a .22LR due to wishing to have reduced noise in a couple of situations. Now, my first impressions having had a 17HMR for some time where less than favourable. I have now had some time to get to know this Rifle and I have set the zero @ 70 yards, this allows me to be fairly accurate with shots to 100 (hold over a mil) and 50 hold under a mil and remain fairly inconspicuous when used with my NV set up. I am now enjoying a deal of success from high seat and sit outs in the truck on some Paddocks and an area that Anti will lamp me within 10 mins of hearing the crack of my HMR……. So all in all if I had to go for just one it would perhaps be the .22LR as with NV I can get very close and don’t always need the range on offer with the HMR. The HMR is loads more fun to shoot so I am not about to get rid, but the .22LR is now doing the majority of my Rabbit control and as I shoot around 750 a year its proving very cost effective
pegasus bridge
its a bit like swings and roundabouts for me with the .22 v the .17hmr, i'm currently using the .22 more than the .17, but i know this will swing back at some point. usually inspired by a need for longer range
V8 90
I sold my .22lr as I hardly used it favoring my Hmr I found the .22lr very quiet (as we all know) but the noise of a bullet imapacting a rabbit seems to startle any other's nearby :o I have shot countless multiples of 4 or 5 rabbits with the Hmr :D But only ever did a couple of 2's with the .22lr. I am looking to buy another .22lr for some obscure reason   Probably because I have a free slot & I'm getting into NV more & more SO if anyone in the North lincs area has a CZ 452 .22lr going cheap I'm after one ;)
bullet boy
I'm mainly using my .17HMR now over my .22LR.I know though on one of my Shooting permissions if there's loads of Rabbits the .22LR is the tool but for now it's having a rest in my Cabinet! grasshopper
I'm swaying towards a .17hmr at the moment to use with NV. Got a ladder and some larson traps running that the farmer and me check in his Vitara. The odd driveby occurs whilst crossing the fields and recently i have had a few shots with his HMR (CZ THUMBHOLE VARMINT) and been quite impressed with it. I have 2 cz .22s,one of which is used with the Archer NV,but judging range at night is difficult. I have a slot ready on my Cert,so question is,do i plunge
artschool
it's funny because I have a slot for a Hmr and no interest in getting one because of the noise.

grasshopper
how do you find the archer NV? Had mine about 5 yrs now, outstanding piece of kit.Run it on Leuopold and hawke scopes on .22 250 and .22. Had the mag on my bigger Leupy up to x20 with no problems, hence fox easily picked up at 400yds.Hawke scope i cannot get it very good past x6 mag. 4.5x14x50 Leupy is what it runs on now and no probs upping to x14mag. Indeed we picked out a fox at 451yds (ranged) with only the Archer when i went to visit John Galway and Connor in Connemara,IR laser is superb. My furthest is about 230yds but plenty between 170 - 200yds...easily identifiable. Luckyshot off here had a look through it recently and bought a new 1,so he should be able to tell you what a brand spankin new 1 is like. I have another adaptor so am thinking a 17hmr would be a useful addition. Edited April 13, 2012 by grasshopper
Salop Matt
I loved my .22lr CZ452 but i couldnt live with so many rounds zinging off into the night regardless of the angle and quallity of the back stop. I simply dont have that issue with the HMR and untill NV comes in under £500 i wont be buying a NV scope. For any quite work i intend to use my sub 12fpe daystate and when i get it my FAC air .22. The 22lr is a brillient round how ever it carrys a massive BUT.....
Gimlet
I keep a Pulsar NV scope on my .22 LR, the .17 HMR gets used as a dawn and dusk shooter and a general walking round gun. The .22 and NV has proved invaluable through the winter months and for mopping up areas that have frustrated me in daylight because of footpaths etc. With the longer evenings and early mornings the HMR has come back into its own, but I reckon the two rifles are used pretty much equally. I've only had the NV since December, but I keep a shooting diary for my own reference with all details recorded including gun used, time of day etc, so it will be interesting to see after a full year how many rabbits are taken with each rifle and when. As for noise, I don't think the volume is the issue (within reason). Its familiarity. The HMR makes a very distinctive noise and rabbits learn to recognize it. I have a very awkward field on my ground that has a 500 yd scrubby headland that is undulating, wide and backed by a bank and hedge. Its rabbit heaven but quite difficult to shoot. Its hard to approach discreetly on foot and it really tests your range estimating skills. Vehicles can't be used so I've tended to shoot it with the HMR, from a tramline in the winter/spring shooting towards the hedge (the best way), and from a sniping position on the edge of the crop when the vegetation gets higher. I have to be careful not to over-shoot it or I'll quickly be down to one-shot sessions. They definitely get to know that crack. When I got the .222 I sat at the top of the field one evening shooting down onto and along the headland from distance. That patch had had a bit of a hammering lately and I didn't expect it to produce much, but it was a good spot to try out the new rifle. The triple isn't moderated and makes a terrific racket compared to the rimfires, but I shot 6 from 150 to 320 yds within half an hour. They were startled and confused by the noise, running about and looking up, but they kept coming back out. I wouldn't have got away with that with the HMR. The first crack would have shut the colony down til after dark. So the answer, I think, is to mix it up. Don't over-rely on one gun and one approach so you don't form a pattern that the rabbits will learn. On that basis I find all three rifles invaluable and I wouldn't part with any of them. They all have a part to play.
