Sco77w
Ive had a phone call tonight from a guy I know (not well enough to call a mate) and he has to get rid of his dogs and asked if I would have his Cocker bitch. She's about 5 years old has a pedigree is trained and works well to the gun. He know I have wanted a dog like this since the first day I saw her, I never thought for a minute I would actually get her. Well I pick her up tomorrow. Photos to follow. Sco77w
Looks a nice cocker Is she a mallowdale,Druid, bred bitch or one of Simon Tyres breed. I don't really know anything about her. I saw her for the first time about a year ago and loved her from the first minute I saw her. The guy who owned her has said I can have her 5 genaration pedigree but I don't want to push him as I know it has been a big wrench letting her go. I'll catch up with him tomorrow with a bit of luck. Sco77w
I've had her out for an hour today with the other 2 and I'm starting to doubt her level of training. She can be sent out in any direction you like but won't pick up either balls or a dummy. I hope she doesn't think she's in some sort of retirement home. I'll try and meet up with her old owner tomorrow for a bit of a chat and put her through her paces at training on Sunday.

The older one was trained to a very high standard but for the first few weeks you'd have sworn the dog had never had a minutes training in it's life he was clearly very upset at the change and shut right down. There was nothing I could do but encourage him and give him time. It took almost two months before he fully snapped out of it and came back on form - he hadn't forgotten anything - infact you knew by the confused looks he gave you whilst working him that I was the one needing the training - I still get those looks 18 months later . With a bit of time I'm sure your Cocker will come good.
eccles
I think you will be better off taking your new dog on its own for a while. It will take a bit of time for you to get used to her and her to get used to you.Get the owner to teach you her commands, whistle, etc. When i have sold dogs or given to mates i always spend at least half a day with them. Also to let me know if things starting to go wrong before they are ruined. I will be taking her out on Sunday and seperating her from the other 2. As for her commands I've already stumbled across the command for her to stay is "wait" after several trys giving a hand signal and telling her to stay resulted in her just walking up to me, one firm wait and she sat there like a statue. hoping to catch up with the guy I got her from today. eccles
Hope you are enjoying your new dog.I see that you did not receive any commands of old owner. I am surprised that the word wait made dog stay. Most trainer just use the word stay. That is why i said make sure you get all the commands of your friend. Some trainers for example use Hup or sit.get back or get out etc.You dont want to confuse a new dog after re-homing.

I've tried constanty over the weekend to try and contact the last owner and even drove over to Sheffield to call on him but failed to speek to him. I'm aware that he has some personal issues he is dealing with (why the dogs had to go) so I don't want to hound him, but its really frustrating as I'm scared of un-doing any of her training with conflicting or confusing commands. I'll keep trying, I'm in Sheffield again on Wednesday night so I'll try and catch him then.

Sco77w
I managed to catch up with the dogs last keeper today for a brief chat. He said this dog was used just for beating as she has never picked anything up, not a good start but I suppose I don't have to worry about her chewing my new slippers. He did give me her pedigree tho. It looks like the trained dog I was expecting isn't. I don't really mind tho she is a great looking dog, has a good nature and seems to respond to some instruction. Training starts Sunday. Day 1.
Sco77w
Looks a nice cocker Is she a mallowdale,Druid, bred bitch or one of Simon Tyres breed. I don't really know much about this pedigree thing but there are 5 Wernffrwd in her pedigree, 3 of which are FT CHs. 4 Gwimbernants, 2 of them FT CHs. 13 FT CH in total and a SH CH way back in the 5th genaration. Nothing recent tho. I've found a few of them on the Rytex gundog website.
Sco77w
Looks a nice cocker Is she a mallowdale,Druid, bred bitch or one of Simon Tyres breed. A bit of internet searching has turned up that a lot of the dogs in her pedigree are in the pedigree of FT CH Mallowdale Grand who's now at stud. does this make mine Mallowdale or doesn't it work like that?
