caeser
Took pigeonwatch member limestone cowboy out yesterday for a day after the pigeons. Speaking to the landowner ,she was a bit bothered about the increase in corvid activity in the area. After driving around several fields etc, we decided that the wood pigeon shooting was still not yet quite ready, so we opted to go after the crows and rooks and jackdaws to keep the landowner happy. There certainly was an increase in their numbers. We found what looked like a good spot, it was a cattle feeder in the middle of a field near a small group of tree's.It was a foot deep in mud in places around it. There was about 40 or so bullocks in the field, but we managed to herd them into the next field and shut the gate. Biggest disappointment was the fact that I'd left my battery powered flapper at home. It always works a treat on the crows. Anyway ,I put the 4 decoys that I had, in and around the feeder. Also put a couple of pigeon decoys out in the grass. The corvids started to slowly come in for a nosey, knocked a few down, and also a couple of woodpigeon that had wandered near to decoys. We noticed a small group of woodpigeon kept dropping into the opposite side of the field, just feeding on the grass. So Mike took half a dozen pigeon decoys over there and settled under a hawthorn bush. This turned out to be a good move. We had a great day. Don't actually know the numbers shot. I lost count after about a dozen crows, but I did shoot off about 75 cartridges. My shooting was a bit erratic yesterday, but I definately managed better than 1 in every 2 shots, so I reckon I'd knocked down about 40 birds. 4 of which were woodpigeon. Mike did better on the woodpigeon, shooting a dozen of them, and about 25 corvids. Crows were dropping into a big wood near us, and into a rape field too, so picking up wasn't too successful. All the pigeon were picked up, but only picked up around 40 corvids. There was about 50% rooks, 30%crows and 20%jackdaws. I had the .17hmr with me, so when a wounded crow went hopping off away down the field, it was quickly stopped with a .17 round. So a great day out with a grand total of 16 woodpigeons and more than 60 corvids. Interesting I thought, checking the pigeon crops to see what they'd been feeding on, mainly clover, which was to be expected. But a couple of them, had just grass in there. Can't remember seeing that before. Once we'd finished, we opened up the gates for the bullocks to let them back to the cattle feeder for their ,what looked like potato gratin, but smelt like sick. Just to finish off, I popped a rabbit off with the 22lr before we went home. We were just doing a bit of recceing for a lamping session soon. limestone_cowboy
Oh, forgot mention, we even got a free air show from a couple of Red Arrows ! Flying directly above our heads, practising I presume. The one dishing out the red smoke made a massive red heart in the sky. Very, very impressive I have say. Red heart? Maybe a messgae to his wife/gf/bf? Great to see anyway. LSC
