new to the flock
Well the summer has been wearing on and I have been busy putting up a fare bit of things harvested. Have already made Strawberry Rhubarb Jam, Blue Berry jam, Apple Sauce Preserves, Strawberry Jam, and a few others. Alot of the garden has been eaten already and there is alot to be harvested yet. I have 2 hogs coming olong nicely for the beginning of November, and that brings us to the poultry. I have a couple dozen chickens for the freezer along with a dozen turkeys, and 6 guinnea fowl. Yesterday I figured that I had better grab one of the meat chickens to see what they were weighing in at, so after I finished kennels in the morning I stepped into the poultry yard to to get an idea of weight. Well guess who forgot that he had let the Terrer out in the main play yard which is conected to the poultry yard through 2 gates. :o Guess who also left both of the gates open while he was having a hard time catching a meat bird to check the weight. :o NOW guess who came in behind dad to help You got it in comes Cody has a chicken in .02 seconds and looks at me as if to say whats the problem this is easy Not exactly what I had in mind as I figured the bird would be realeased to spend its day chasing crickets and grasshoppers oh well one cleaned bird later found out the birds are around 8 pounds dressed so booked the chickens in for next Tues. Could have been worse a couple of months ago he would have killed the whole lot before checking to see if it was the right thing to be doing Heres Dinner going into the oven, Thanks Cody

Ferret Master
Don't you just pull their necks? Or is it the gutting/plucking. FM
new to the flock
It is the plucking that takes its toll. After that many birds I would not walk or stand up for 2 or 3 weeks. NTTF
Ferret Master
Ahh you use the bird between your knees method. We stand over a wheelie bin and pluck away while warm.
new to the flock
No Mate I hang mine on a gamin when doing one or two birds and pluck standing up. However thanks to an accident a few years ago I have a very bad back. I just can not physically stand and work in that position for any length of time.
