Dog grabbing lead

He's not a gun dog and this isn't a problem as such buts it's been puzzling me for a while so i hope someone can give me educated guess.

I take the dog out for a stroll, it could be a 100% lead walk or a bit of lead walk and off the lead if we go somewhere less 'main road' and a little more secure, he snuffles about and does his things but it seems that as soon as he senses we're going home he grabs hold of the lead at the handle (it's a rope lead) and won't let go til we get home.

A few nights ago, it was a lead walk, main road route, i had no alternative but to about face at the half way mark and at that point he grabs the lead, so i turned back around as if to make him think we are carrying on the walk and he won't budge, i give up that 'idea' and head home but the whole way he's got hold of the lead.

Tonight he's on the lead heading out, we get to a lane, off the lead, through some woods etc, back onto teh lane and back on to the lead, get to end of lane, senses we're going home and grabs the lead.

It's not a problem as he walks right along side me without pulling and sems quite happy but why??? Once we're home i unslip the lead and he drops it.

At first i thought it was a sign that he wanted to go home as he'd has enough as if we visit relatives etc with him he goes and picks up his lead if he gets bored, like "ready now, lets go!".

So what do you think, is there a logical explaination? Have i explained myself and the dog?
