A few of each on oat stubble

Went for a wander around one of my perms on Sunday evening and noted a field of oats had been combined and baled, and with plenty of birds on it, too the first chance I could to attack in in anger. Unfortunately upon arrival this morning there weren't any numbers on the field, probably due to some huge fields of oats across the vally having been combined and visibly drawing the birds in. Undetered, I set up on a known crow haunt between a neighbouring farm and a rookery, and dug in to the hedgerow.

Birds were investigating but shying off, so was thinking about changing the pattern when the farmer turned up to cut his hedges, so had to move out of the way and used the time to alter the patter from a U shape to a L due to the right to left wind and flight line. This worked and started to pull a few birds down and in, with me then adding the victims to the pattern.

After the lunchtime lull, it became obvious that the birds were wanting to drop in to a heavily populated area of the pattern, so I changed it again and bunched up the decoys and deads, which again seemed to gain their confidence, if only my shooting was up to scratch to capitalise on it!

Farmer had finished hedge cutting by now, and then started to take in the bales of oats. With him was his trusty springer who, upon every bird I hit, proceeded to run the length of the field, pick up the bird and take it back to farmer, including a few of my dead bird decoys, which was fun and annoying at the same time, she took 7 in all!!!!

Finished the trying and slow, but enjoyable, day with 7 rooks, 7 crows and 11 jackdaws (1 not picked as over hedge) and missed a magpie which would of made it one of each (never seen a Jay down here!). 1 crow was rather large, never seen one so big! ( bottom pic, the one that's looking at you!)
