Right so two and a half hours to strip the engine and I found out the problem fairly soon after taking off the inlet manifold!

Here are the pics :)

So heres the engine minus the inlet and pipes, you can see a lot of **** there! #### knows what it is but it seemed to be mud, coolant and metal flakes……..

Following this the gasket came off

Little dark inside and you can see a pool of emulsified oil/water in the corner! Now the engine has been covered up properly so thats old!

RUST

the #### that put the last inlet gasket on had over tightened the lip that holds it from the looks of things……..

Timing cover came off easy enough as did the water pump….oil filter wasn't having any of it though

Chain looks ok at first glance and was nice and tight

Not what I wanted to see colour wise

Anyway chisel and hammer to the cam side of the chain as I wasn't going to keep it nor the cam

like the engine work, used to build these for a living using wildcat heads, gave crazy bhp figures, when your bolting it back together ignore the manuals, torque figures they use are for dry and clean threads, if your like me (old school) and lube the threads, then torquing and angular tighten there is a big risk of stripping the threads, even on full on race engines we used to do the big ends to 35 ft/lbs and mains & head bolts 65 ft/lbs, plenty of lube on the cam and dont let it idle too long when you first start it, fill oil pump with grease or vaseline as well (only the brits could use an engine that had so many problems sucking up its own oil)

Excellent :) thanks for that! Going to soak all the big ends in WD 40 before putting them on properly, little teflon tape instead of loctite as it was a right bitch to get a few of the bolts undone! Had to put the spanner on then kick it to break some of the threads

Will do a rebuild later in the year once I get the new engine sorted and the interior finished off, hoping to have it ready to go for MOT in rough state in a couple of weeks
