Fib new
Since you changed it to electronic ignition it could be due to the coil. Had the same prob à few years ago; changed the coil to a flamethrower coil and had à bright spark. Never used an other coil for my cars again... Dr_evil
hmmm fair point but too late now old ones coming out this weekend and the EFI is coming in given that it has an extra 40bhp over the old one! And will be more economical too not really a V8 word that but still

Dr_evil
Right so two and a half hours to strip the engine and I found out the problem fairly soon after taking off the inlet manifold! Here are the pics So heres the engine minus the inlet and pipes, you can see a lot of **** there! #### knows what it is but it seemed to be mud, coolant and metal flakes…….. Following this the gasket came off Little dark inside and you can see a pool of emulsified oil/water in the corner! Now the engine has been covered up properly so thats old! RUST Emulsion the #### that put the last inlet gasket on had over tightened the lip that holds it from the looks of things…….. Anyway on I went! Timing cover came off easy enough as did the water pump….oil filter wasn't having any of it though Chain looks ok at first glance and was nice and tight Then I found the start of a link breaking Finger into sump to check oil again Not what I wanted to see colour wise Anyway chisel and hammer to the cam side of the chain as I wasn't going to keep it nor the cam ********………..mess mess :o Anyway onwards! This was what was left in the sump…..
Dr_evil
Oil feed pipe came off and away I went with the crank Quick progress check 12 point, 13mm swan neck spanner for big ends Then onto the crank journals Some came away with the ratchet and 19mm IIRC Others needed a little more persuasion! So crank out, journals and shells lined up in order too! Crank out and onto the heads! Gaskets were clean, rust free and no cracks The valley! The other side Heads and crank Pistons 4-8 1-5 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 All quite coked up as you can see Emulsified oil on journal bolts on output side Progress check part 2 Another sump pic
Dr_evil
Cam lobes, working 1-8 and then 8-1 for the pics Looking down on the lobes Bores, ran nail down them and no roughness at all! 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Fun time The inside as it stands…..made of glue and rivets! The outside as it was Start your grinders! Aftermath from outside! The inside after Junk……. Pushrods More junk No one will notice…….. neil82
like the engine work, used to build these for a living using wildcat heads, gave crazy bhp figures, when your bolting it back together ignore the manuals, torque figures they use are for dry and clean threads, if your like me (old school) and lube the threads, then torquing and angular tighten there is a big risk of stripping the threads, even on full on race engines we used to do the big ends to 35 ft/lbs and mains & head bolts 65 ft/lbs, plenty of lube on the cam and dont let it idle too long when you first start it, fill oil pump with grease or vaseline as well (only the brits could use an engine that had so many problems sucking up its own oil) Edited February 25, 2013 by neil82

Going to soak all the big ends in WD 40 before putting them on properly, little teflon tape instead of loctite as it was a right bitch to get a few of the bolts undone! Had to put the spanner on then kick it to break some of the threads Will do a rebuild later in the year once I get the new engine sorted and the interior finished off, hoping to have it ready to go for MOT in rough state in a couple of weeks

neil82
Took it into the workshop and got it a quick look over…….three of the lobes are nubs! probably the back three, suffer from oil feed problems with them beeing so far from the pump, have seen them practically round but still running
Dr_evil
the others are more or less bald too, couple on the front are down a few mill, back ones as you say are wasted and mid ones were worn and chipped
sandspider
Impressive strip down. I like the fact you use the back of a Landrover as your work bench!
Dr_evil
Cheers engines are simple enough when you have the right size spanners, a good dose of brute force and a lot of space haha the back of the pickup seemed sensible seeing as it was sat there anyway
