WinchesterDave
What does the different shaped heads of an air rifle pellet do? Do each have different jobs? Pointed/flat/domed?
Wharf Rat
Domed have the best performance. Flat are for close range target shooting as they leave clean holes in paper targets. Pointed are for kids, who think they penetrate better, have more power for hunting, look cooler etc. Stick to dome heads!
Catweazle
Hollow head pellets are less likely to go straight through the quarry, possibly useful in barns, but usually hopelessly innacurate at anything other than short range. Pointed pellets have a theoretical trajectory advantage, unfortunately in order to be accurate they have to be extremely well made, which they aren't, so forget them. Flat head or "wadcutter" pellets are designed to make clean holes in paper to aid scoring, they can also be very accurate at medium range, probably a better bet than hollow head pellets for most things. Round head pellets offer the best compromise between trajectory and accuracy and certainly they are the best currently manufactured for use at medium and long range.
