CoolhandMal
Hi all, My son has just been granted his FAC certificate as he has been shooting air rifles most of his life and wanted to upgrade to .17 HMR and a .22 RImmy however, could anyone help with firstly the 17HMR,what make is best and why?also comments like zeroing in and bullet choice,I am going with him to a few RFD,s on Saturday and would like to be armed(excuse the pun)with some knowledge to have some input in the guns on offer. Thanks in anticipation guys
bedwards1966
The best value for money would be a CZ. They are cheap, accurate and well built. There are other guns out there, but you won't notice them shooting any better, and they cost far more. For the bullet choice I'd suggest the 17gr ones, I think many people don't find the 20gr to be that good, though peoples' needs vary. Zero at 100 yards. For the .22 (I assume long rifle) I'd suggest 40 grain hollow point subsonic ammo (it's quiet and accurate), zero at 50-60 yards. Olliesims
I have a cz 455 thumbhole in .17, great gun and cost me £445, all .17 ammo is made apparently by the same company, just then rebranded for the other customers, I use hornady 17g v max at 50 for £10 ive used winchester supreme 17g v max as well what was pretty much the same zero as the hornady but for £15 a box, the 17g round is the most effective altho you can get a 20g(I think it's 20) hollow point round, but I would stick with the .17, as its such a flat round a 100 yard zero will put you at a point and shoot from 50 - around 130 yards, but as you might know the .17 and wind do not mix well and the bullet will drift a lot

kent
Get a trigger kit for the CZ and your onto a winner. Got to say i am not of that mind set. The CZ trigger is wear to fit and becomes real nice with use. Lighter trigger meand less engagement, not a great idea in the field in the hands of a new user especially so. Oh BTW i am on my 3rd CZ now and not a trigger job on one of them
