Dawn and dusk and right on the point of nightfall is the best time to shoot them but you need to be on the spot earlier even if you're walking up otherwise you risk blundering into them. I'm finding 11:00pm onwards more productive with the night vision. Its quieter then and they move further out into the open. The fox won't worry them unduly unless they've got a lot of juveniles above ground.
