muntjac?

Recommended Posts

I'm away next weekend stalking muntjac for the first time,(haven't even seen one before). I have done quite a bit or roe stalking and shot one red but looking forward to this. The forecast is looking a bit wet and windy,(great  ). Are Muntjac as put off by the rain as Roe deer? I also understand that they don't stand around for very long? Hopefully get a crack at a CWD too,(unless they are hiding away from the elements). Just hoping the forecast improves!

Any tips would be greaty appreciated. I'm not a novice but always appreciate some info on something different :good:

If you shoot Roe then you may well have a butloe knocking around, Muntjac will come into a butloe but you will be immitating the call of a fawn so quiet little squeaks. I have had alot of success with this technique but watch out as often a munty will appear right behind you out of nowhere. Munties also like to be around the edge of darkness, there seems be nothing around, the light starts to go and they are suddenly running around like rabbits.

Cheers! So really you only have a few seconds to shoot. Even when they are feeding do they tend to browse and move?

They do stay still, just more times than not when you see them they will be on the move. If you see one trotting bye giving a quick bark ( the best you can do a jack russell ) but make sure you are ready. You may have to bark a few times but usually they will stop, they like to know whats making the noise. Be warned, once they have worked out what you are and they don't have a hole in them, all you will see is a white tail dissappearing at high speed. As with all deer stalking, don't be in a rush to track one down, sit up for a few minutes, give a few quiet squeaks on the buttalo. Sometimes one will start barking that you can stalk down on, I've called them in so close that I could hear it chewing in the heavy cover. Highseats and buttalo's work very well together.

Yeah barking is good but you have to be quick they are normally on the move but they do stay still around the pheasant feeders so that's one of the first place we will look for the the munties, good luck they are great fun to go after and can be quite challenging, fingers crossed for you I hope you get the chance of a CWD I love going after those I think they are a stunning looking animal especially a nice buck with big tusks by far my favourite deer GOOD LUCK!!!!

They can be tricky little beggars and one of the commonest views of them is the white flag dissapearing in to cover.

I find they are a lot less likely to stop and look back than roe once they are on the move.

I have never tried calling them but its got to be worth a go.

I find ours are active by day more so than roe.

edited to add,

I stalked a doe and a youngster this evening in the tipping rain and they seemed less bothered by it than I was. Good job they were not needed as the scope was pretty blurry.

yup its surprising how much cover there is this year a really wet summer and it has grown a little too well. Its some of the best munty stalking there is, CWD well I've shot one and can't quite get the hype (or cost) as they are rather boring to stalk in comparison. Taste very good though

Well done buddy sounds like you had a good time mate well done he has some great ground down here, I love CWD I think they look great on the wall it's just a shame that the counties there found in are not as picturesque as Scotland then that would be great but love all stalking but as has been said what ever floats your boat.......

Thanks! Yeah the stalking was still interesting but it doesn't compare to roe. I'm having the CWD shoulder mounted which will be a nice memory of the trip. Didn't get to taste CWD or munty though as our suitcase,(flew down) was bang on our limit weight so couldn't take any back.

Maybe another time!
