ROY
After spending a couple of hours in a high seat yesterday with a good friend freezing me butt off for no Muntjac to appear i am now hooked believe it or not and am thinking of applying for my FAC. Does a deer conditioned FAC differ from a normal FAC and how would i go about persuading my FEO to grant it???
bedwards1966
All you need to do is apply for a deer legal caliber, and show that you have 'good reason' for it. To show good reason you need to have permission on suitable land with deer on it, or show you've booked a paid stalk. Some forces want you to do a DSC, however this is not a requirement. It's quite possible that the police will want someone to confirm that your safe with a center-fire rifle (which your friend can probably do), they may even require you to be accompanied by another FAC holder for a certain period of time before you can shoot on your own - it varies from force to force. A 'deer conditioned FAC' is simply where you have a FAC with a rifle on it that your allowed to use to shoot deer. ROY
Thanks for a very swift reply thats what i was hoping to hear. I am going to book myself for an introduction to stalking day and maybe dsc1. I know my FEO like s to see that you've at least had a go at the gun your after. I did have a go with a .243 yesterday on the range and was really impressed with my accuracy with it. Deffinately will be going further I am sure my friend will be more than happy to mentor if he's asked as he loves getting new people into the sport. njc110381
I went straight to a deer calibre when I got my first FAC. The main reason it's seen to be a little harder is that generally they like you to get some experience with smaller guns before you step up - a deer round is after all about twenty times more powerful than a .22lr firing subsonics which in turn is nearly ten times the power of a legal limit air rifle. The energy from a cartridge that size is huge and margin for error is small. It's great that you enjoyed yourself even though no shot was taken. It's all part of the game, getting out and enjoying the surroundings. Sometimes I don't even shoot things when I see them, it's not all about that. If the chap you went with is willing to mentor you then great. I wouldn't even worry about the DSC unless you plan to stalk on land that insists you have one. If your friend is a good stalker he will show you all you need to know, make sure you're accurate and safe and know how to deal with the carcass once it's on the ground. All the DSC does is offer that learning to people who don't have anyone to show them and you can always book a course later when you know more. It will be a lot easier to pass if you already know 99% of what they're telling you. I still haven't done mine five years on... I don't need it so would rather spend the money on ammo! Browning
The energy from a cartridge that size is huge and margin for error is small. The energy from ANY caliber rifle (from .22LR upwards) is enough to kill and has small margin for error. Know your abilities, know your firearm, ensure you have a good safe backstop and you will be fine. A .270WSM is just as safe as a .22LR in a safe shooters hands. scobydog
Hi Roy, i was in same position as you, got hooked on it then booked 2 stalks then applied for fac, got all info together gave to feo and 5 days later had fac with .243 and .270 slots in hand. But that is with GMP who are pretty fast at issuing these things. Good Luck S
