Magus69
I have bought a few guns from them, but they have all been obsolete calibre stuff so have been able to have them delivered. I did buy a double 8 from them which when it arrived had a square hole through the packaging (looked to me like a steel table leg had gone through) and whatever it was had dented and scratched the left barrel about halfway along. I contacted them and took some pics of the gun and packaging and sent them to Holts. They immediately offered a full refund which I declined as they said they could have it sorted by their gunsmith with the option of the full refund still there if I wasn't happy with the repair. The gun was with them for a few weeks and I was getting a tad annoyed as all they could tell me was the gunsmith was on with it, when it was finally ready Holts sent one of their buyers/evaluators to deliver it personally and make sure I was happy. The dent was completely gone not a trace inside or out, the barrels had been rebrowned, and the chequering cleaned out, to say I was as happy as Larry is an understatement. Mike... jackinbox99
Been tempted myself as I get their catalogue come through every time. Remember though that on top of the purchase price they charge 22.5% commision, then on top of that you have 20% VAT !
b16jus
Yea it adds up, alough i worked it out as VAT was only on the commission not the hammer price. Maby im wrong J
Hector Vector
I've bought quite a few from Holt's. Some good buys to be had but you need to be very, very careful - there's a lot of not so good stuff about. The better stuff (at reasonable prices at least) is getting harder to find. I've always bought at prices that are better than retail and you usually have a good selection to look at. Do you homework first, be very cautious, very careful, bid sensibly, don't get into a bidding war with anyone, walk away if you have the least doubts and you could end with a good buy or two, or three... Andy135
I bought my AYA from them in the summer. Top service that time, instead of charging me to RFD it to me, they agreed to bring the gun with them to a valuation day that was nearby. 45mins drive from me instead of 3 hours up to Norfolk. Perfect. However, I wanted to bid on a gun in the most recent sealed bid auction, phoned up and asked for barrel wall thickness measurements on a couple of lots I wanted to bid on, but I didn't want to place a bid without knowing the thicknesses beforehand. Got told "No problem sir, we'll get back to you next week with the measurements". End of the following week & I've not heard from them, so I call them, to be told "sorry, we'll get them to you by the start of next week". Ok, but given that the sealed bid auction ends on the Thursday of next week they need to honour their word. So, Thursday comes and I've still not heard back from them. I call them at 9am - the auction closes at 10.30am. Get a promise to provide the measurements by 10am, still time to bid. 10am comes and no measurements. By 10.15 I let my heart rule my head and place a bid anyway, only to have their website tell me the auction has closed, 15 mins earlier than the published deadline! So not only do I get let down by their staff promising and not delivering, but their website closes the auction early! I wonder what their sellers would think of them closing early and potentially missing out on a higher bid...
gypo
Yes my son and I have bought many rifles shotguns and accessories from holts and if you read the description and study the photos carefully you will get exactly what you see their descriptions are very accurate but as far as I know ,you have to bid through a RFD. Stormhound
"but as far as I know ,you have to bid through a RFD." Totally wrong - no you don't, never been a requirement to be a dealer in order to bid. Bought plenty from Holt's as a private individual.
