JDog
I went to some fields of uncut wheat this morning and there were at least 400 birds feeding on them. The flight lines into those fields are well known to me but I did watch for a while just to make sure. I was set up and ready by 11:30. The first shots put up about 300 birds but they didn't go far as the feeding is so good. There was a good breeze and it was one of those days when flocks of pigeons wheel about looking for their feeding companions. Every returning flock had at least 100 birds in it, some of which peeled into the decoys, others were taken as long crossers. By 1:00 I had fired 68 shots and had 36 pigeons and 3 carrion crows in the bag when the heavens opened. Normally I would have sat the rain out but I had only just managed to get my car across some very wet ground when I arrived and the thought of being stuck in the middle of nowhere was not appealing so I hastily packed up and gingerly drove back to the road. These fields will shoot again so all is not lost but it would have been nice to have had a full day's decoying with so many birds about. matone
It`s a shame when the weather goes wrong on a promising day! I guess it`s happened to most of us at one time or another. It`s a tricky time for driving on fields, that`s a fact !
