TJ91
just ask for some loads for clay pigeon shooting and some loads for pigeon shooting they should be able to point you in the right direction 28/30/32g 7s or 6s for pigeons should do (clear pigeon are good all round cartridges) could use them for clays aswell or get some lighter loads with smaller pellets...for clays i just buy the cheapest cartridges they have in

TJ91
any idea what a silver pigeon sporter chamber size is? i aint got a clue! have a look on barrel will say 12/70 or 12/76 probably 12/70 is 70mm - 2 3/4inch 12/76 is 76mm - 3inch most clay and pigeon cartridges come in 70mm case or shorter so you will be fine just get some 30g 6s, they will kill most pest/vermin in sensible range Edited November 9, 2012 by TJ91

Be careful if you are using them at a clay ground though, where I shoot the biggest shot you can use is 7.5 and no steel, some places are fibre wad only as well Edited November 11, 2012 by lees
robbiep
Be careful if you are using them at a clay ground though, where I shoot the biggest shot you can use is 7.5 and no steel, some places are fibre wad only as well As the OP says they are hoping to go pigeon shooting at some point as well, I'll put this in, as a landowner : That's the one thing that has stopped my allowing anyone else to shoot on my land, unless I am with them. Plaswads. Fibre wads are slightly more expensive than plastic, but you're only talking £5 to £10 per thousand. That's half a pence or 1p per cartridge. As a landowner, my opinion has become that if you are too tight to spend that on not littering my property, then you don't get to shoot on it. There are plenty of suitable cartridges for clay and live shooting. Most 12 bore cartridges will be 67/70 mm, and anything from 6/7/7.5 shot will drop a pigeon or rabbit at reasonable ranges. 24g is probably a little light, and you may start to get gaps in a pattern. 28g is a 'standard' load, and can usually be bought at very keen prices. In terms of what particular cartridge to buy, you could ask 20 different people, and get 20 different replies.
